Local anaesthetic at dentists in second trimester safe?

Hi Ashley! I'm a dental hygienist also with local anesthesia capabilities

ITA with that is safe, and we do give LA to patients in their 2nd trimester.

And it's true it's worse to leave these things as is, if they absoutely need to be done of course.

There are different types of LA you can ask for the one without epinephrine (elevates your BP). I would just talk to your doctor on your options as well.

Good luck!

Ah another dental hygienist! :) Where do you practice at?

i've had one a few weeks back, paid for a white filling though as they don't do mercury fillings at my dentist during pregnancy or for any period of breastfeeding. The anaesthetic they just used one that was ok in pregnancy  i was told absolutely no mercury fillings during pregnancy by midwife as well as dentist  i paid £60 for my white filling

How are you paying for you're dentist hun? I had 2 White fillings and didn't pay a penny as I'm pregnant xxx

https://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/are-pregnant-women-entitled-to-free-NHS-dental-treatment.aspx

i had a free checkup, scale and polish and consultation for filling was free but
he said a white filling is "cosmetic" so i had to pay £60... he wanted me to have a free temporary cap then a filling in a year or so but a mercury one
which i just don't want any silver fillings (this was my first)

did they not class yours as cosmetic if they were white? xx

Nope, mine was all done free Hun. My check up, scale and polish and 2 White fillings, that's why I was a bit shocked to see you has paid for yours xxxx

hmmmm... i'll ring the nhs helpline i think and find out why i had to pay and if they should have done it for free!! thankyou! :flower:

i've actually JUST this evening had some pain on the opposite side now whilst eating, fiddled with it a bit and now i can feel a big hole in the same tooth on the OPPOSITE side! :dohh: so no fillings my entire life then two needed in pregnancy!? not a happy bunny lol x

Ok I have booked an appointment for tomorrow morning wish me luck! How big is the drill?!
Im still scared about the anaesthetic but feel a lot better by everyones advice so thankyou everyone xxx :)

hi i had a white filling about a month ago but he didnt numb it. it was a filling that had fell out so he managed to sort it pretty quickly and painless, then i had a tooth removed last monday. i was put on antibiotics and ibuprofen before hand and the dentist said it wouldnt be a problem. they only do it if they need to though. if you cant cope with the pain anymore and there is no other option they will treat you as the risk factor isnt too bad.
even though i was petrified of having my tooth out i am so glad that i did and all is well now. had no problems with my pregnancy since x

Well ladies I have a wisdom tooth that needs to come out and my dentist wont even consider removing it untill after the baby comes even tho its causing me pain. I also needed the tooth next to it filled as the old filling was coming away. I had to have my filling removed-tooth drilled and re filled without any La.... I'm not very keen on the dentists to begin with but now i just think they are brutal!!!!!. So U can have a filling without La if u need it. This happened last wednesday for me 22 june 2011.

i would see another dentist chick. my wisdom tooth had a massive hole in it, causing me a lot of pain and my dentist didnt think twice about removing it. either that or explain you cant live with the pain and you fear the stress of toothache is having an effect on baby. unless it is going to be an extremely difficult extraction and you need to be put to sleep i dont understand why they cant relieve you of the pain?
my filling was done without being numb and wasnt too bad, he cleaned it up a little which was unpleasant but once its done its done. i would look into it more. toothache is seriously not nice! i have never cried in pain before getting toothache like that x

Local anaesthetic (but not a general) Is perfectly safe to use during pregnancy as it is just that- local! It is injected into the area around the tooth, and is only in effect in that tiny area- hence why only the area where they inject goes numb. It will wear off in a matter of hours in most cases, and won't even have gone anywhere near your baby. :)

I know this as I work as a vet nurse- only slight different to humans ;)

x

my dentist wont do my work till baby is here as i need a bit done lol had teeth crack around some old old fillings and its gonna be a hopsital job i was waiting on a second refferal ( didnt get the first appointment letter through ) when i found out i was pregnant and it is all gonna be done under a GA as its less trauma for me ( got dentist issues ) so just got to wait it now now

I had a filling a at 22 weeks with a very mild anaesthetic and a white filling - the mercury ones are apparently more dangerous but the white paste type stuff is supposed to be perfectly safe. My dentist said she would only do emergency dental work during pregnancy (I had a fractured tooth and she thought it might have to be taken out if she didn't sort it before baby is born). x

re: size of drill.. it's no different to other bits and bobs they put in your mouth and dentist. The needle is long, so close your eyes before they bring it near you i would.

I was terrified of going as it was my 1st filling. I didn't feel a thing except a little discomfort when he put the metal brace/clamp thing on my mouth and he caught my gum which was a bit painful but was an accident and shouldn't happen next time but it was nothing major, didn't make me yelp or anything

i literally lay there with my eyes closed and thought about LO the whole time, other than the noise and the general tugging around of mouth and pressure you don't feel anything..!

not bothered at all if i have to have another white filling for this cracked tooth i've just found so don't panic :flower:

I would get a second opinion. If it's causing you pain, it ain't gonna go away! I see your 24 weeks, that is a LONG time to be in pain for. The only thing I am thinking is if the wisdom tooth is an unfavourable position. I'm sorry you had a a bad experience when you had a filling done too :(

I've just found out that I have too have emergency treatment on Friday. I've had a dodgy tooth that needs a rool canal, but the dentist said if we can we should leave it be until after bubs arrives, but now I have suddenly development a huge abcess and gums/face is swelling up. She said now it must be treated as to leave it could cause more problems for me and bubs than treating it would. I'm on a course of penecilllin now then it's being drained on Friday with a local. Not looking forward to it, I have to admit! x x

laughing gas? is that just gas and air? we use that for labour in uk... how could you use laughing gas whilst getting dental work? your mouth is being held open and being drilled at!!?

The piece is placed around the nose but yes I hate it when my patients need to use it because it makes my job harder! I can't see nearly as well and I have to tilt my head sideways to get a better view.

Nitrous Oxide can cause spontaneous abortion, and even us dental personnel aren't supposed to be around it while we are pregnant, let alone breathe it in. Definately a no no!

I used it when I was younger to get my wisdom teeth pulled. I'm getting a tooth pulled this afternoon and although I wasnt planning on using it, I was just curious if it was even safe. I'm really trying to do as LITTLE meds as possible while pregnant!
