So, it never occurred to me to discuss my lo's birth weight with my ob. Ds2 had IUGR although it wasn't officially diagnosed because it was an on call doctor who delivered him, not my ob. Weight measurements weren't really done in utero, so his weight was a complete shock. He was born at 39+1 and only 5lbs 14.8oz. There's preemies and twin babies that were bigger than him. For the 1st year of his life, his pediatrician asked if he was a preemie at every appt and I was asked if I ever smoked or did illegal drugs while pregnant, NO, AND NO!! NEVER! Even now, at almost 3, he is 26lbs. Ds1 was born at the same gestation, 39+1 and was an even 7lbs. It just dawned on me that maybe I should bring it up with my ob to monitor this baby's weight. Should I do that or assume that she will be okay?

I would definitely mention it, my dd was born at 38 weeks & weighed 5lb2, I am having growth scans from 28 weeks to make sure everything is on track.

My dd was 5lb4 born at 37+2 due to preeclampsia so they're doing growth scans at 28 and 34 weeks just to keep an eye on this one, even if the preeclampsia doesn't return.

Well I have my 28 week scan next week so I think I'm going to bring it up then.

My 2nd daughter only weighed 6lbs 4oz at 39+5 and I'd had scans every 2 weeks which showed her growth was right on track. Some babies are just small.. all of mine have been.

Since your second son was bigger there's probably less to be concerned about. I'm sure your daughter will be perfectly healthy even if she is a little on the small side! :)

No, my 2nd baby was the smaller one. My first was 7lbs.

My first baby had IUGR as well, and was born at 38+4 weeks, weighing 5lbs 7oz. My OB during my second pregnancy had me take low dose aspirin every day to help the placenta remain strong, and then gave me a growth scan at 32 weeks to ensure that he was growing well. And he was! He came early, at 36+6 weeks, and weighed a whopping 6lbs 11oz! But it's possible to have IUGR again in a subsequent pregnancy, which is why they will usually monitor growth more closely. In fact, even though my second was fine, my OB is still having me take aspirin this pregnancy and will give me another growth scan.

Oh, sorry. I read your post wrong! :dohh:

Well in that case I'm surprised your doctor isn't wanting to monitor baby more closely this time. You're doing the right thing by bringing it up, although there's no real reason why it should happen again. IUGR is sometimes just one of those things.

My daughter had severe IUGR -- they went in and got her at 35w5, and she only weighed 3.5 pounds.

With this pregnancy, I am definitely being heavily monitored, but I am also taking baby aspirin AND I am staying on the Metformin I was prescribed a month before we got pregnant (for PCOS) the whole pregnancy.

I did some research and read that the Metformin can make a HUGE difference for those with a previous IUGR baby if taken the whole time.

However, it sounds like you had lovely, healthy little ones that weren't too teeny. But I would probably ask for so e extra attention to be paid.
