Hey everyone! So we went to our 18 week appt. this morning and we found out that we are expecting....... A lil BOY!! We are so excited :)

During the scan, my doctor mentioned that I have a low laying placenta. She didn't seem worried at all, but she said I need to come back in a couple weeks, and if it is still in the same position, then I immediately have to stop working and that I would be at risk of miscarriage, premature birth, internal bleeding, etc. Again, she ensured me not to worry at all and said it was fine for me to continue with my travel plans and everything.

I read up more about it when I got home, and some of the stories are a bit scary :( has anyone else had this experience and maybe have some positive things to say to make me feel a bit better about this?

Hi there, I'm surprised you are going back in two weeks. With my son they noticed a low-lying placenta at 20 weeks and said I had to come back for a check up at, hmm, I think it was 32 weeks. I asked my consultant about it and she rolled her eyes. She said too many women were scared too early on. As it happened, I went to the check up and the placenta had moved up. No worries.
Placentas do move most of the time so it seems really early to become worried at 18 weeks. Try to relax until a bit later in your pregnancy :hugs:

Thanks so much! I wasn't sure if I should be worried or not, especially since my doctor said I have to stop working if it's still the same after 20 weeks... I have a low risk office job where I don't do anything too strenuous, so I was a bit concerned that I might actually need to stop working. Not concerned about work, but concerned that myself and my baby would be at such a high risk that it wouldn't be safe for me to sit around in an office. I feel much better now though after reading about your experience!

I have one too, found at 20 week scan. I go back for a scan in 2 weeks to see if it's moved up. My Dr is confident that it will and has told me not to worry about it. I've not been given any restrictions and still lifting weights and exercising and picking up my kids, etc. with no problems to date. My Dr said that if it were placenta previa then that would be a different story and I would be put on restrictions in a case like that. Mine is classed as just low lying, 9mm from OS to be exact.

Ive never heard of anything like that from a low lying placenta. But placenta previa like PP just mentioned would result in very strict restrictions and has all the dangers your doctor mentioned. Do you know if it was just low or was acros your cervix hun? xx

I'm not sure exactly... I think maybe completely across the cervix, but I didn't really ask too many questions about it because the doctor didn't seem concerned. And I went to a different doctor today to double check and she said it's laying completely underneath the baby, but since I'm only 18 weeks it's not diagnosable and again, she wasn't worried at all.

I'm flying overseas tomorrow which is why I was concerned, and I'm kind of freaking out about it now, but both doctors weren't bothered by it... Just weird to me that if it's not bad, why I would immediately have to stop working in 2 weeks.??

I read about placenta previa as well, but it can only be diagnosed after 20+ weeks. I really hope this flight goes well tomorrow :|

P.s. I'm also young (23), don't smoke or drink, and am not overweight, which are all precursors for placenta previa, so I guess maybe I'm a rare case, and hopefully it will shift up on its own.

thats why they will want to check you again in two weeks then hun. :hugs: I hope it moves out of the way :hugs: you should be ok as long as you dont yourself under any strenuous stress or heavy lifting etc hun.

you find the "risk factors" dont really matter hun. its the same for pre-e.. you can be the healthiest fittest person and still get it xxx

I had my ultrasound yesterday and I have the same thing. I was told that I have to have another ultrasound at 32 weeks.
