I have been TTC No1 for nearly 4 years now and last year I went to see Dr again (tests on me and hubby were clear)
She told me I won't be seen by a specialist until I bring my BMI down to 30,
Anyone else had this??

I would see a different doctor then...ive heard so many ppl being turned down due to weight and its stupid! I'm over weight and so is my hubby and I'm seeing a specialist and he recommends us losing weight but he wasn't going to preach about it. I know several women that are overweight and they get pregnant. I'm 5'2 and I weigh 180 lbs...somewhere in there...I know I need to lose weight but if they are preventing you from getting help then I would see someone else :) good luck Hun!

Hello

Although we were seen by the consultant, we couldnt access any fertility treatment on the NHS until I had a BMI of less than 30 and DP's BMI was less than 35. We went on a diet and lost 7st between us which got us our first IVF on the NHS. I think there are less restrictions for private patients.

Although it was hard, risk of miscarriage is higher with higher BMI and also DP's SA was higher after weight loss so I suppose they have their reasons.

While I think it's good to try and lose some weight, you can always find a doctor who is still willing to help. My doctor hasn't really pushed me to lose weight. She has pushed me to eat better and get exercise, especially walking everyday. But she never hesitated to treat me or my husband, who is significantly more overweight than I am.

See a different doctor.

Most specialists won't treat you for IVF/ICSI if your BMI is over 30 but will still give you medication, ovulation induction and possibly IUI.

I can't find any information about what the requirements are but you could call the department and arm yourself with as much information as possible.

She should still refer you no matter what. It's not up to her who they treat and who knows, you may lose weight before the appointment anyway.

Thats what we need. We need just some help for a while. I have lost a stone but due to a bad shoulder injury, exercise is not happening at moment so its harder to shift the weight.

My SIL suggested I try another Dr and see if they say the same thing. I am not getting any younger.

unfortunately in the Uk they have weight limits for Infertility services on the NHS - I'm in the same boat... i have to get my BMI down to 35 (max) they would prefer 30 and under. My BMI 3 months ago was 41.... it's now 36.4! SO close!! I've lost 2 stone so far in just 3 months on slimming World - Food optimising extra easy! I LOVE it! It's the first thing that's ever helped me shift weight so easily, without giving up real food!

Good luck! x

Hi Ragdoll

XXShell is right, each healthcare trust in the uk has a set of criteria for people it will treat, for most it is a BMI of 30 or less, that said in my area that is specific to actual "help" (ivf etc) and not the actual tests. You should be able to google the specifics for your area or ask your doctor for a copy, but as the tests take a considerable time I would be asking for these alongside your journey for a lower BMI

Hope this is of some help, good luck x

Initial blood testing should be done regardless of BMI, also HSG shouldn't have a BMI limit either, but they prefer to do other testing before this is done. I can't have a Lap done for Endo check until i lose the weight.... hence this weight loss journey i'm on. If they are refusing to do ANY testing with a specialist until you lose weight then that's wrong! I was told this, rang the fs direct and then told my dr she was wrong and my referral went through!
