Lucozade sport in a sippy cup?!!

I know that my friend drinks it sometimes as she is diabetic and it helps bring her blood sugar back up so maybe the toddler has a reason she drinks it.
That's what crossed my mind. I guess it is easy to jump to the wrong conclusion but sometimes mums do have good reasons for doing things which might, to others, look terrible.

Ohh well I am a terrible mother it seems - I have poured part of the contents of a Ribena bottle into Izzys sippy cup on days out.

The fact it contained water wouldn't have mattered to anyone watching, buy hey ho

 Nah, for you to be a truly terrible mother, it would have had to be a Vodka bottle

You know what, I really would LOVE to do that in public to see the reaction I got :haha:

It was almost certainly lucozade sport as she broke the bottle out of a pack of 4 that she had just bought. As some have said, perhaps she had a good reason for giving it to her daughter.

We don't have lucozade sport, but from what I could find it's like our gatorade. Which drs here actually recommend to help hydrate because it has electrolytes. Only if they are sick or something though...like if they have a stomach bug but won't take pedialyte to give them that instead.

My boys have had gatorade, when we sometimes go out for the day like the zoo or something we will let them go pick something to drink and alot of times they will pick that because it has a sport top which they drink well out of. But it's very rare they have it actually, I guess maybe at most a few times a year, and they weren't having it until they were 2 or older...I'm pretty sure Hayden has never had any. If we did give it to Hayden I can see someone thinking he was much younger, 18mo or so because he's so tiny. Maybe it was just an occasional thing or the kid was sick? Who knows, hopefully it's not something they give all the time because it does have quite a bit of sugar...or ours does. I guess everything in moderation...or that's my thinking atleast and we are pretty strict on what the boys have.

I suppose it would be ok if she had a reason as stated above like diabetes.

But once I saw a mother take her young child into McD's and pour irn bru into his bottle!

Unless there is a good reason children shouldn't have sugary/carbonated drinks, my son is nearly 5 and still isn't allowed fizzy juice (well he hates the bubbles anyway lol) because I want to look after his teeth, and sugar makes him hyper and a bit naughty! lol

i think it can be easy to jump to the wrong conclusion, i know the OP has said that she think she just baught the pack so it must of been lucosade but on other occasions when people post here saying "i saw a mother giving this and that to a 5month old" and so on i think its slighty rude just to bash people when we dont REALLY know whats in the bottle and that there may be a reason why they are giving it.

i remember going out and the baby was on the bus with me on our way home and i had run out of baby milk alys was only about 4 months and all i had was an empty bottle and my mineral water (which i understand babys arent meant to have) but she was screaming for something so i poured that into her bottle till we got home.
from someone elses view that may of looked really bad but in my opinion it was the best i could do.

but in certain cases where parents insist on giving their children shit then fair enough have a rant lol

xxxxxxxxxx

zane has Ribena at home and i only use a drop in his cup but on days out i also buy the ready made up bottles but i wudnt give him whats know as a energy drink such as lucozade.

but before anyone starts i no that ribena is full of sugar

no i think a treat now and again isnt a problem and no one im sure would fill their baby with junk but i think its too easy to jump to conclusions when we dont know exactly what is in a bottle.

Ugh, reminds me of Jamie's school dinners when he was arguing about healthy food with a mum who was bottle feeding her baby cola.

ew!

my uncles ex wife used to give her daughter (whos 19 now lol) coke in the bottle! but aparently she shook all the bubbles out so it was flat because she thought it'd be healthier  my mum said she used to be shocked when she did it!!

poor kiddies teeth!! x

makes me angry when i see ppl give there small children drinks that have caffine and loads of sugar in, my oh's sister has a little girl who is 3 and half and after nursery on a typical day she has a jam butty, 4 packs of chrisp and a family sized bag of buttons and she is the most naughtiest child i have ever seen, im sure its down to her diet. makes me laugh that she told oh she could not have ketchup because it had sugar in it! and when i asked if she could have a chicken sandwich she said she wouldnt eat it before she even tried her with it

sorry that turned into my own little rant

Wonder if the LO had been ill or something and needed the energy? I know my friends LO was really ill with bronchiolitis and she gave her an isotonic drink cos she wouldn't eat anything and was losing a lot of weight.

ive got a ill boy now and the only thing he will eat is muller corners, far as im concern long as hes eating something im happy. hes still on his baby milk too so when he gets ill like this i no hes still getting what he needs.

ule give ur babies anything when they r ill to make them feel better so maybe her baby was ill like others have said

Sorry to resurect and old zombie thread, but I found this while doing a search on lucazade sport & young children.

My 16 month old son is recovering from severe vomiting / stomach bug, he has spent a day in hostpital on IV / fluid reteplacement.
We have him back home now as all his tests were clear, so his condition is not serious and he he starting to hold his fluids down.
Water is fine for hydration but does nothing to help his blood sugar or salt levels.
So he has had some squash and dilouted lucazade sport, as he refuses to drink dearilite (which is what is normally recomended)
Although the squash and lucazade contain many nasties (aspartame anyone?) they are also rich in glucose and sodium which he desperatly needs to prevent him from beoming lathargic.
Even the Peadiatrician has supported giving him these drinks, until he can start eating solids.
So im just supporting those that have already said: there are special circumstances for such things and we shouldnt be too quick to judge.

Under normal (healthy) cirumstances, we would never give him such artifical drinks, the only drinks our son ever gets is water, his formula milk and very VERY occasionally some tropicana - since getting them used to any sweet drinks so young only builds up there reluctance to drink water, which is best thing for them to drink, period.

2 much juice in sippy cups is really bad 4 ur teeth, let alone lucazade!!

Are you sure it wasn't just a Lucozade bottle filled with something else? If it was actual Lucozade then I think she's crazy. I give my LO water every day, but squash and juice on rare occasions. I would never give her anything fizzy and certainly wouldn't be giving her an energy drink.

My dauhgter was "dangerously dehydrated" a few months ago, and I called NHS direct and they told me about Dioralyte (sp?) and she said even better than that was just to give her tap water with sugar in it, because it does the same thing. I appreciate that your doctor has recommended a little Lucozade, and in small quantities it can't be too bad, but sugar and water must be healthier?

In a sense yes because it contains less crap and bad chemicals, however glucose its still better for you that sugar, even though it is a type of sugar itself.
Also the sodium in lucazade provides boost to salt levels which water and sugar will not.
Esentially Daerolite - the giood stuff is glugocse adn salt. the problem is that it tastes horrible so todlers tend to refuse it.

As for my own child - he is now off the lucozade (thankfully) and starting on mashed potato, if he can keep some carbs down with out being sick, we will move on to other steamed & liquidised vegatables.
He seem much better now - a huge relief, the worst part of having children is when they er... malfunction :winkwink:
Seeing them suffer is the worst thing ever :nope:

hmmm seems a bit strange to me, also if the lo was that ill then surely they should be at home? although tbh im not overly fussed, up to other people what they give their child, just mine wont be having things like that

Hmm. I've had to give Jack flat coke/sprite/whatever I had as he'd often polish off his fruit shoot and be thirsty, a lot of shops don't accept my card and I tend not to carry money on me so it'd be a case of finding a cash point, withdrawing money, finding a shop with appropriate drink etc with a thirsty toddler. I've got awful organizational skills so rarely remember to pack some change/spare drink, luckily most of the time I'm drinking water anyway :haha: but yeah, if that happens he just has some of whatever I'm drinking til we can find an alternative. He's not dropped dead as of yet :p
