Making formula

My Health visitor advised me today to pour boiling water in to setrilised bottles and keep at room temp until ready to feed and then add the formula when needed and feed at room temp. She said that the forumla will not grow bacteria as long as the feed is given right away.

She advised me that the storing of mixed formula in the fridge method causes more bacteria as it only starts to grow when the mix is added to the water.

I'm confused about which method to use?

If you click the link that ke29 has posted it takes you to the guidelines set out by the World Health Organisation - they say that formula powder should be added to water that is no less than 70 degrees, even if it is to be used straight away. And it also says that if you want to pre-make, to make it up as if you are using it straight away then rapid cool and store in the fridge.

I would follow the guidelines of the World Health because there seems to be an awful lot of confusion between different health visitors x

thanks guys but these guidelines are from 2007?

They are the current guidelines hun, the World Health Assembly requested the Organisation to develop them in 2005 and they are still used today - they are taken directly from the World Health Organisation website xx

You are quite right. Thanks :)

How confusing for my HV to tell me not to do this! I am now going to spend the next few days worrying as I gave her LO a feed the way she advised. i.e cooled boiled water and added powder when needed. :(

Aw love don't fret, I know hundreds of women do it they way your HV said without any ill effects - it's just I, personally, feel it's better to be safe than sorry xx
