I probably take too much notice to things but I'm really confused by this.

My son is on Aptamil and is currently having 5/6 feeds in 24 hours.

In the daytime I make the bottle from scratch as I know roughly when he will want his feed. I boil a fresh kettle of water, wait around 30 mins then pour the water in the bottle and add the milk whilst its still hot.

Of a night time, I do the same but leave the milk out so I have 2 bottles ready with the cool boiled water then in the night I warm the water in a jug and once hot add the milk.

My question is, do you think this is ok. The recommendations say before you add the milk the water must be at least 70 degrees to kill bacteria in the milk but no hotter than this as it can destroy the nutrients in the milk.

How on earth are you meant to know if its 70mdegrees?

I'm going crazy with this....

The way you make it at night is not the recommended way, as you know.

I do have a tip that will help.

If you want to make a 6oz bottle....

-boil a small amount of water in kettle
-pour it into bottle up to 2 oz
-add your 6 scoops of formula and stir
-then add 4 oz cooled boiled water (I would have some cooled boiled water stored in a bottle on the side unit)
-and there it is a 6oz bottle ready to have at perfect temperature, and made to the correct guideline eg adding milk to hot water

This is the way I made my daughters bottles, day or night, it only takes around 2 mins to make and no need to allow cooling time.:flower:

I have a thermos flask sitting in the kitchen. It get filled up in morning and again at night. I boil the kettle, leave for half an hr, then pour into the flask. That way the water is always ready to use without waiting for the kettle to boil and cool a little. I make the bottle with that water then set the bottle into a jug of cold water for a few mins and it's ready to go.

As per the World Health Organisation advice I make up and store in the back of the fridge just before I go to bed. Then the bacteria is killed when you make up the feeds. In other countries people will leave feeds for up to 24 hours after making up.

It is just not practical to make up fresh at nighttime.

This is what I do, too. 2-3oz of freshly boiled water, put in the formula and shake it up, then top it up with cooled boiled water from the fridge to make up the full amount.

Hipp sell a formula thermometer on their website which I use to tell the temp of the formula.

As pp said, it takes two minutes (if that!). We always have a few ready to feed cartons in case we get caught out and realise we forgot to put some boiled water in the fridge.

I made up night bottles exactly the same as you OP. Never ever did my LO any harm and I found it to be the safest and easiest way to make night bottles. I've never made up a bottle and kept it in the fridge, I really don't feel comfortable with that method for some reason!

I take a flask up to bed and two sterilised bottles and two portions of formula and mix them up when LO is ready for them

Hey hun, I've actually been making up LO's bottles the way it used to be ok to do- I make up his 4 feeds for the day, and leave them in the fridge. I know it says not to, but people made them that way for years, and I've been doing it for 17weeks now, and never had any problem with Leo. Theyre never left over 24hours, as he takes 4 bottles per day.

i also make 24 hrs worth and leave them in the back of the fridge. so much easier than faffing with half cool half hot etc.... my baby is 11 weeks now and she hasn't had any problems.

I make 3-4 bottles in advance and store in fridge. (boil water, wait for 20 mins, add milk, shake and store in fridge)

I've tried other methods such as using a flask or half cool half hot water and my LO was strangy fussy with these feeds ? (not sure why or if just a coinsidence) so I've gone back to my normal method.

Ive not had any problems with her feeding and she has gained plenty of weight.

its confusing as you read soooo many different views and advice, best to go with your instincts and if LO is feeding well then you cant be doing much harm?

Scalding tap water...mix the formula, and store it in the fridge. Microwave when ready to use, for about 30 seconds. did it that way for ds, and this way now for her. No problems. Bottles get sterilized before each use.

I make up 2 bottles before bed at 4oz each. Flask if boiling water and jug. The water is to warm the bottles up if needed. No probs with either of my 2
