Making up bottles

make up 24 hours worth every night and leave in fridge. Chloe has them at room temp so going out has never been a problem

I always make up the water and put in the fridge then heat the water back up before I put the powder in.
This is what HV told me to do, I was previously making whole feeds and puting them in the fridge but was told that longer than 6 hours in the fridge is dangerous.
So much conflicting advice, I wish they would just make up their minds and stick to one way of doing it!

we have always made up the water at night for the next day and add the powder and heat when needed. there is so much conflicting advice, i was told never to make up the feeds in full x

My hv said to boil the water and put in a thermos flkask to keep it at 70 degrees. I do that a couple of times a day and then can make the bottles up when needed

I used to make up each bottle completely then keep in fridge till needed then warm up, but then i found the little dispensers so i started using them (so just putting water in bottle, then putting formula in when needed). So ive voted for water then add powder when needed :)

with so many ways to prepare the bottles i wanted to see what most of you do.,..

im in a bit of a dilema.. i usually sterilise 6 bottles.. boil the kettle and fill them up.. then add water to each as needed..

luisa then has it at room temp apart from her last feed between 10-12 which i warm up.. (in hope it will help her sleep!)
but the colief drops for her colief works better if left in warm milk for 30 mins before feeding!

the instructions say tht if you must make feeds in advance add to warm water then leave to cool the refridgerate..

but the HV doesnt reccomend this? but im sure alot of you girlies do it this way?

thanks in advance!

I have four kids and have prepared the formula all the ways you described. I tend to use bottle baby water and powder when we are out. But, at home I tend to make batches for a day.

I am going to try to BF this one. But, should it not work out for the whole first year. I will do powder one at a time with drop ins.

My formula says to use cooled boiled water, not hot boiled water. I boil the water and fill up the bottles and cap them all...don't see how they could get contaminated with the nipple and cap on.

Lol sounds like I am the only one to make them as I need them :happydance:

I make up 6 at a time by sterilising, putting boiled water in and closing them with the caps then when i need one i add the powder and give it to her! i dont put the bottles of water in the fridge to cool and only heat up the odd one if i think she will take it better

HV said the same to us that you can't keep the bottles in the fridge for longer than an hour but i read in my NCT book "complete book of baby care" that you can make up the days bottles and store them in the fridge for 24hrs so I do that no point rushing around when bub wakes up when you can have it all ready IMO. x

nope! I make them as I need them too. I also boil the water in a kettle and empty it into a jug and leave that at room temperature.

Never had a problem with this method and it seems the easiest.

:)

I wash and sterilise 7 bottles at a time, while sterilising I boil the kettle, I then pour the water in and leave them on the side at room temp and add the powder as needed, we usually stand them in a bowl of hot water for a few mins but Liv will drink them at room temp tbh.

My HV and midwife both told me to do it this way and I have had no problems x x

Thats what I do. Every morning I boil the kettle and fill a large flask. Then all I have to do is pour the water from the flask into bottles when Jayden needs a feed and its still boiling hot. Saves messing around waiting for the kettle to boil each time. And then I change the water in the flask at night so its fresh for his night feeds. x

You should never make up water in advance and allow it to cool for too long, as the water needs to be boiling to kill off germs in the formula. The formula isn't sterile, and that's why you need to use boiling water that has cooled for no longer than an hour. Otherwise, there is little point in steralising.

The recommended way is make up the feed and refrigerate. :)

this is what i do too.

if you had to boil the kettle at every feed and wait 30 mins for it to cool
1. baby would be purple from screaming, and 2. your electric bill would sky high. its a rule formula companies use to cover their ass's

either make them up with 70c temp water and put in the fridge, or use a flask of hot water with 70c water.

common sense really if i'm out i warm the bottle really hot if i know he'll want it within the hour or take it in a cool pouch thingy and a fisher price bottle warmer flask and warm as i need it, if i'm going out for the whole day i'll take ready made just to be on the safe side.

it does state at the back of the department of health leaflet 'making up formula' that refridgerating is another way.

Im so confused!!!!

So I boil the water... put it in the bottles then leave the bottles on the side. Then when shes hungry I take the bottle heat it a little then add the powder. Is this wrong?

The only thing I'll say with this method is that the powder formula is not sterile so it should be made with water that is 70 c or higher to kill any bacteria.

It is so confusing though, as different people say different things. A mw told me to do it the way you do and my HV told me not to do it that way but to make them up and put in the fridge.

At the end of the day, people do it all different ways and our babies are ok so I'd say go with what you feel the most comfortable with.

Oh I thought I had it down now reading this I feel like it is my first one again! lol:blush:

Amelia only has 3 bottles per day so i make them up as she needs them.

Not sure what i would have done when she was younger and was feeding every 3/4hours.

We boil the kettle, put half a bottle in fridge and the rest in a flask. Then when she wants it, we make up with the flask (half the water) mix the powder up. Then add cold water from fridge. It is then ready to go at correct temp. From rest of flask we replace water in fridge, and repeat. We use the fisher price flask which isn't enough for more than one bottle, and I'm not sure how long it keeps boiling for. So are going to get a bigger flask.
Does anyone know how long they stay above the 70 degrees?
