hey guys so i just found out its my bro in law's wedding in November in Pakistan and obviously i realised i need to take malaria tablets...

Is that even safe while TTC? i google'd it and it says need to go back on to contraception if wanting to take malaria tablets and continue for 3 months after you finish taking them....well this has thrown my plans off!! Now what?! :nope:

Husband is saying so many people will ask why I'm not there, it will make it look like we having problems etc (you know how nosy people can be, especially since i not been back for 18 years and now i have the chance i didn't go...) but Hubby wants us to TTC...dilemma, he goes lets make them change the dates...but it doesnt solve the problem of me having to take the malaria tablets still...and why change the date just because of me? hmm....not good.

What to do? i know the pill messes you up and i wanted to TTC this year...going back on it and then going off it again isn't that going to mess me up more?

Advice please.....

Don't take malaria tablets while TTC as they can cause severe birth defects. If you do take them, you must stop TTC and wait at least 3 months (although many doctors say 6 months) before you can start TTC again - so that the chemicals completely leave your body.

For this reason we changed our honeymoon location - I couldn't risk not taking malaria tablets where we were originally going.

Im going to dominican republic on tuesday, im already in 2WW as didnt realise taken the tablets were harmful when TTC, nothing much i can do now about it but its still a big worry!
Not ttc for 3 months after is like a lifetime to all us ttc'ers, not sure what il do with that. Im actually considering not taking the tablets...... Iv read that there is some malarial tablets that are safe to take when pregnant so you have plenty of time to see you doctor about them? Or could you not just use condoms for awhile?Xxxx

Ok since my last post iv been to doctors, the brand im taking - Avloclor which you just buy of the shelf from Boots are SAFE to use when ttc AND when pregnant but just to check with your doctor first. Yay! xx

Oh my God! I didn't know about this! My DH and I are planning a safari to Africa this summer as our last big holiday before TTC. We were planning on starting to try whilst there. So glad I read this. So are they lots of brands that are fine to take when TTC? The thought of delaying TTC by another 3-6 months kills me!

Shouldn't have done that... just googled it! I think I'll ask my docs and not read stuff on the internet again!

I wouldn't take them whilst ttc - When I went to india in 08 the malaria tablets made me feel ill. I hated taking them and it took me months to start feeling better. If they messed up my body in such a bad way that I felt that ill i dont want to imagine what that would do to an unborn child.

glad your doctor told you about one that was safe though! good luck with it all, hope you dont get many nasty side effects like almost eveyone in my group did.

i was told its the type of malaria that determines the type of tablets you can take?

im going doctors this week so will find out if i can take the Avloclor tabs...but a family doc told me as well to not risk it and dont go if im TTC...

i'm gonna miss the wedding now....

Not been back to Pakistan for 18 years and i would be going back as a bride...poor hubby gonna be asked why i didn't come...they will think we having problems...uh oh

Avlovlor leaflet advice

ok having read this...im not taking it!! click on the link above and read the pregnancy and breastfeeding section...also the side effects....eek

In the pregnancy and breastfeeding it says its fine? Im taking it just now and currently in 2ww. Doctor assured me its 100% safe, i take 2 a week. People can also take them for arthirtis and they would take 2 A DAY, which would be unsafe. If you look at any tablets eg paracetomal etc they have lists of awful sounding side effects aswell.

I wouldnt cancel holiday, just get a doctors 2nd opinion for reassurance xx

I've just had a panic too.

I'm going to India the week after next, in my 2ww now. Went to doctor's yesterday for something quite minor and said "by the way, I'm going to India but it's a low risk zone so I don't need to take malaria tablets, that's right isn't it?" He looked quite taken aback and said I had to go to the travel clinic ASAP as there are other things to be vaccinated against too.

I am so daft! Both oh and I went to clinic this morning and had no idea that so many things might be necessary AND that possible pregnancy would present such a problem! We're not doing malaria, but I've been booked in again just before we go after AF is due to reassess.
:nope:

well my doc warned me off today going to place where there is malaria, so means i cant go to Pakistan, said best to be safe than sorry.

oh well :nope:
