I think this is important to know- as I've has so many friends/co-workers tell me they are painful and thus, they put off having them...
Of course, because of what I'd heard, I was very nervous the first time I had one. But it was fine- not painful AT ALL. Yes, it can be a smidge un-comfortable with how you have to press up against the machine-- but otherwise, it shouldn't hurt.
I've had 3 in the past 3 years (just had one yesterday)... and they were never painful. The scan tech at my first one (after I told her I was nervous cause so many woman told me how painful it was) actually said "if it's painful, then it's not being done correctly. There is no need for it to hurt to get a proper image."
If your's are painful, then I would ask questions- or find a new technician. There is no reason to put of having one because someone is not properly doing their job or making it more uncomfortable than it should be.
