Hi girls just a quick question about maternity allowance do u have 2 pay it back if u do not return back 2 work after ur maternity leave. It is all so bloody confusing just carnt get my head around it at all. Any info about MA would be greatly appreciated.

My company policy says I have to pay back the company mat pay if I.don't return for at least 3 months. It doesn't effect normal smp, just any additional smp your company may give you through their scheme. I get full pay for 8 weeks then half pay plus smp for another 18 weeks so it works out at quite a lot for me.

Hi Maternity Allowance (not SMP) DOES NOT have to be paid back to the government if you do not decide to return to work. Id already checked up on this as I was in the same boat. However, theyve sacked me now! x

Sorry yes maternity allowance does not have to be paid back as it comes from the government, statutory maternity pay doesn't have to be paid now either. Some companies will make you pay back occupational maternity pay. They are all paid at different rates so it depends which one you will be getting.
