I've recently had to start sleeping on the couch because suddenly my bed has been causing awful pain in my tailbone and hips. I do have a pregnancy body pillow, which has been a godsend throughout this pregnancy, but even that's not helping relieve the stress on my hips unless I sleep with it curled under my hips, in which case I wake up with neck ache!

I miss sleeping next to DH, and the couch isn't actually particularly comfortable, just somehow better than the bed right now. I can't figure out what the problem with the mattress is, though. It wasn't expensive--it's an IKEA mattress with a memory foam topper--but it's been fine for four years until now. My husband keeps making suggestions, like slipping plywood underneath to firm it up, or, if I think it's too firm already, buying another foam topper, but I can't decide what the problem is! Do any of you have experience with this--firm vs. soft mattresses with pregnancy aches and pains?

On another note, I can't believe tomorrow I'm supposed to move over to 3rd trimester. . . I want to thank everyone here for all your advice during these past weeks, and I can't wait to see you all there! :flower:

We have a Tempur-pedic mattress and I LOVE it! We are currently away from home (and my dear Tempur-pedic) and we are staying in a furnished apartment and the mattress is HORRIBLE! I wake up aching because the mattress is so bad. My hips, back, and shoulders kill me in the morning! I can't wait to go home and sleep in my own bed again!

The Tempur-pedic mattress is a bit difficult to adjust at first, but when you get used to it, it is amazing (at least in my opinion). They are on the expensive side, $2000+, but it is worth every penny. If you guys do check out some new mattresses, take a second and check it out :)

I couldn't agree more! We bought ours when I was pregnant with DD because I was miserable. It was hard swallowing a 3K pricetag, but if you think about it, you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping, so you should have something super comfortable. This mattress is worth its weight in gold!!

Have you tried getting a thick dooner (quilt?) and placing it on your side of the bed? It may help relieve the tension the mattress is causing

I have a select comfort sleep number bed I got after a car accident messed up my back and hip and I would swear by it!! The best thing ever!!! Good luck!

I have the exact same problem.
I've also been sleeping on the couch. The problem with me is our mattress is too hard.
I specifically bought this mattress for my aching shoulders but now it's just too hard to support my weight around the pelvic and hip area.
I've tried sleeping with a pillow between my legs. That's helped some.

Yeah, I'm thinking ours is too hard. . . I made the mistake of laying on a rug on the floor while messing with one of our cats the other day, and the pain in my hips/back was immediately ridiculous! And clearly THAT was a hard surface, so maybe the mattress is, too... I might try getting an inexpensive foam topper for my side of the bed.

It's actually funny you said that! I'm also getting pain with my tail bone.. I slept in my mom's bed the week she was on holiday. Memory foam mattress, had no problems. But my bed's always been fine and comfy. Until now. So yeah, I've go for memory foam.

i had the same problem...my matress was to soft, got a REALY firm one now and i sleep like a baby, OH cant sleep on it tho says its too hard lol so were in separate beds atm lol

We have had a firm Latex foam mattress which we purchased before we got pregnant but is still less than a year old. It served very well before I was pregnant to relieve shoulder and back aches I used to get from the old sagging mattress.

But now that I am pregnant I feel the same pressure in my hips because the mattress is too firm.
We took two of the memory foam tops (looks like about 1" thick each) that were on the other beds and placed that on top of my firm latex mattress.

What a relief this has been! My body sinks into the cushiony comfort of the pads but yet I have the firm support of the firm mattress underneath.

This is an affordable fix that you should try if your bed is currently too firm before you go out an make an unnecessary large purchase.

Hope this helps.
