My husband and I have been TTC for about a year and a half now. The issue is my cycles are extremely irregular. I had a period in December 2011 and then nothing until October 13th 2012... Ive had blood tests, diabetes, thyriod, beta tests (No diabetes, no thyriod issues, and NOT pregnant) I also had an ultrasound at the begining of October and got my results back and my doctor claims everything internaly looks good. I see a gyno on November 8th and hopefully get more answers. Does anyone know any information about PCOS? Anything I should be looking out for? Any ways to increase my chances of getting pregnant?

Its so frusterating seeing my friends fall pregnant with there 2nd or 3rd child, and we are struggling for our first.

Any helpful information is muchly appreciated. Thanks for your time ladies.

Hi I have pcos, your scan may show more tan 15 cysts on each ovary for pcos, you may also have excess hair growth, acne and find it hard to lose weight. These are typical pcos symptoms, some people have irregular ovulation with no cysts present and only one of the symptoms ths s pco losing weight helps with ovulation if you are over weight, they my also give you medication for your ovulation x

PCOS should turn up on your internal scan. Hypefully gyno will help, just ask striaght out about PCOS to be sure.

To be diagnosed with PCOS you need to have 2 out of 3 of the following:

1. irregular periods, or none at all
2. excess of androgen hormones
3. polycystic ovaries

So although your ultrasound didn't show polycystic ovaries, it doesn't mean you can't have PCOS.

Have you had your androgen hormones tested? (That would be your testosterone, DHEA-sulfate, DHEA, Androsterone, DHT, Androstenediol etc.)

I have PCOS and meet all three of the criteria, but on my first set of hormone tests my results came back normal.

You can read my blog if you want to know more about my journey with PCOS. (I talk a lot about PCOS in my earlier posts.) https://asformeandmyhouseforever.blogspot.ca/

The most common symptoms of PCOS are:

Acne
Hair loss (from your head)
Excess hair growth on your body
Obesity/weight gain

To increase your chances of getting pregnant loose any extra weight that you are carrying (if you are carrying any), eat a low glycemic index diet and exercise.

I am trying to avoid giving you information overload, but I would be happy to answer any more questions if you have them. Let me know.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your information. I really hope I get answers when I see the gyno.

Has any ladies on here with PCOS been able to conceive naturally?

I self diagnosed PCOS in my early 20's & was confirmed about 4 years ago. If you do have it, I suggest finding a Reproductive Endocronologist that you can work closely with. Altho having PCOS can make it difficult to conceive, it is not impossible & many, many women are able to conceive with or without help. It might be as easy as taking metformin (for insulin regulation) or just regulating your cycles with BCP to get started. My issue, besides absent cycles, is annovulation - I don't ovulate on my own. With the help of metformin & femera I now have had several successful cycles in a row. (to me, success = ovulating) One of these times, I'll get my BFP - & you will too! If you are PCOS pos, please try to stay positive, altho it's hard...& know that you have a lot of support from those in the same boat...don't hesitate to reach out with questions! Best of luck to you!! :)

Thank you Tish!

Your positivity was much needed!

Good luck I hope you get your BFP soon xoxo

Tich I pave just started metformin, have you seen any difference with weight loss, acne and reduced air growth?

Has any ladies on here with PCOS been able to conceive naturally?

tiffanideanna,

I conceived naturally about 6 weeks ago, but it doesn't look like it is going to be viable. I used clomid to get pregnant this summer (which resulted in MC) and was very surprised to get pregnant on my own.

If you have PCOS and have an irregular cycle you can still get pregnant, but it is much harder as you have no idea when you will ovulate.

Hi ladies, hope I can join your conversations and give you some insight on my story. Hubby and I have been TTC for 5 years now. It took me 3 years to finally get my diagnosis of PCOS, altho I'm not obese and don't have many of PCOS symptoms I still "qualify" :) I have multiple tiny cysts on ovaries and my LH:FSH ratio is off (LH too high). I was able to concive naturally once 5 years ago but MC and once with IUI, but MC as well at 5 weeks. I do have regular cycels and ovulate on my own however, I ovulated later in my cycle (day 18 or 19), and high LH:FSH ratio makes my body to MC. I was given Metformin. First the side effects were not so fun (headaches, sick to tomach, nausea), but if you stick it out they go away (your body gets used to it). After taking it just for two weeks I ovulated day 14 for the first time since I have been monitoring my cycles :) Huhe success :) i have had an IUI on Oct 20 and 21st, and am going for blood work tomorrow (Friday, Nov 2, 2012). I am soooooo hoping for bfp!!! It has been a long time and difficult journey for us. I know how hard it is too see all of your friends just getting pregnant and you can't. Frustrating. I'm soooo ready.
I hope we all get our BFP soon.
Last piece of advice. I have been to 3 different drs and 2 of them have told me that everything looks ok and they don't know why we can't get pregnant. Latest dr (RE) is awesome and as soon as he saw my previous records he couldn't believe they have told me that everything was fine. Make sure you look over your results with your dr or ask for copies. If I have done that it would save me 3 years. Well lesson learned.
Also I have heard many stories from women who have PCOS and have children naturally. So there is hope :)

Tich I pave just started metformin, have you seen any difference with weight loss, acne and reduced air growth?

Kazzab, I have had some success with weight loss, but I've been on a weight loss journey since March 2011. I have not been so lucky with facial acne or hair growth - I get breakouts with AF every month & I'm in a love/hate relationship with my razor... What I do have success with is a significant decrease in the amount of body acne/boils/abscesses to the point where I can't remember the last time I had one. I used to be plagued with what I thought were ingrown hairs, on my inner thighs & under my arms especially. I have some pretty gnarly scars from years of painful lesions - I attribute the lack of them directly to the Metformin.

Hope you are able to reap tons of benefits with none of the nasty side effects! Good Luck! :)

Gosia please please update us as soon as you hear... Fingers crossed that you get your BFP!!!!!!!!!!!!

And thanks again ladies for all the positive feedback. Im sure we will all get BFP's in the hopefully near future!
