Mayo

I've been eating shop made mayo from prett, Nandos etc, but steering clear of homemade mayo as it contains raw eggs. I've been told that shop mayo is just as dangerous? how can this be? it doesn't contain raw eggs, and my doctor, midwife and pregnancy book all say it's safe. confused! x

I've never been told it's unsafe to eat mayo, only freshly made with raw egg, which is the general advice. I'd ignore what you've been told about shop bought mayo, it's fine!

I only eat mayo if I can read the label first - I wont eat it if I cant just incase its made with unpasturised eggs x

Ive been eating shop brought mayo and my midwife said they are fine. I dont think i could give up Mayo tbh! :D

mainstream shops and chain "reatsurents" like nandos etc use pasterised egg/milk in their products.

are you sure they don't mean like a french mayo or something? cos i guess there's potential for those specialised deli mayos to use unpasteurised eggs  hellman's etc. is fine!!

I had to just add, are you one of those craving Nando's constantly? I've actually been there 5 times in a little over a week! :winkwink:

no they were referring to ANY shop mayo - hellmans, mayo in sandwiches from chainshops etc.

I don't eat any deli meats, pates, spreads nothing. They were referring to hellmans and every other shop made mayo - whioch does not use unpasterised egg or raw egg.

I'm wondering how my doctor, midwife and pregnancy books can all be wrong.

i've been eating it since day 1 - i just make sure that DH never puts a dirty spoon in it (ie. mixing a tuna salad and putting the tuna spoon in the pot) and if i see any "bits" in it from DH I don't touch it and buy a new one.. always make sure it's kept well refrigerated too, so I don't see the problem - my mw said it was fine and the preggo books say it's fine too so I don't know why they've said not to have it  i'm gonna keep eating it x

this is one of my cravings!! i bloomin love the stuff! its fine hun just raw stuff bad!

You're wrong actually. For your information -

Thank you for your question. The egg yolk used in the McChicken Sandwich mayonnaise is pasteurised, as are all McDonald's egg-based sauces. You may also be interested to know that, in fact, all the McDonald's egg-based sauces are pasteurised. (December 2008)

So going back to my orginal point - all SHOP based and chain restaurant mayo is SAFE and pasterised and does not use raw egg. It's homemade and restaurent mayo that needs to be avoided.

I love Mayo but haven't had any all pregnancy. I'm really craving burger king Mayo tho, anyone know if that's safe? It seems to have it's own taste so I really wouldn't know which brand it is.

I don't know for sure if it's safe - might be best to do a google search, but my guess would be it's fine to eat as it's a major chain eatery and they all seem to use pasterised egg (and not raw egg) in their mayos. x
