Hi, I'm a little worried that they are saying the measles outbreak in Wales is the start of a UK wide outbreak. From my understanding my newborn cannot be vaccinated until she is 12-15 months old and thats jab 1 of 2 needed for full protection. I'm a little concerned about her catching it before then. I cant wrap her in cotton wool and not take her anywhere! Anyone else worried?

yes i have been my LO is 8 months. as far as i know you can get the mmr jab done at 6months if you are going abroad but you still need to have the 12-13 month one as having it so early isnt effective.

i really dunno what to do:shrug:

Yes it is a massive worry of mine too. I think we could possibly be headed for an epidemic. I'm glad to see people are finally starting to realise the importance of getting vaccinated and are getting it done but still...

I will be breastfeeding to try and pass some antibodies onto my baby and also remember with my other two children we only tended to socialise with other babies which will be the case this time.

The outbreak is mainly in children of school age who haven't been vaccinated in the past, and being as baby will be too young to go to school I'm sure they will be fine. If you have other children I'd get them vaccinated xx

Wow I must ask my mum am I immune, she did not let us get the MMR because of some scare, I would be afraid I am not immune, do they check for that at booking in bloods does any one know?

I live close to Swansea and now we have clusters of the outbreak where I live. We had an emergency email in work last week about anyone born after 1970 to check if they were immunised, if not, to get it straight away.

I rang my drs, they said I had 1 jab in 1980, she wasn't sure if I would have needed another. She said I couldn't have a jab while pregnant.

It is a concern though cause they won't immunise the baby till its older cause its a live virus.

A 25 year old has been found dead today who had been carrying! It's getting worse :(

In Australia they check for that with everything else in your first blood test. I have been vaccinated, got it in school, but they said I will need an update right after bubs is born just because the antibodies are present, but just a little bit weak, which is normal. Same thing happened to my mum. Have a look through your notes or even ask your doctor to get a blood test for it :)

Thanks :flower: I know they check german measles in booking in bloods

I do worry about this, but I had measles at school, I think I was about 6 so baby 'should' be immune. I hope so as it left me with hearing difficulties.

I'm really scared by this, I'm 30wks pregnant and I'm not sure if I was immunised. No one seems to be offering any advice to pregnant women.

I'm in the UK so any advice would be good. I'm now scared to leave the house or see anyone.

I am worried also, but I know I am definitely immunised. My mother LUCKILY didn't believe any of that complete nonsense that was sprouted about autism which is one of the reasons this measles outbreak is spreading like wild-fire.

I will be breastfeeding to try and give her as much protection as possible, and we will also not be travelling to anywhere where there has been a bad breakout.

Well I just had a shitty conversation with my midwife, said chances are I won't be immunised as at my age (32) the MMR didn't exist, not many adults are immunised, nothing they can do for me. Sat here in tears, always something isn't there.

If you tested as having immunity to rubella at your booking appt, you almost certainly had the MMR in childhood. It's been around for ages. I'm 32 and I had it as a child, so more than likely you're fine.

A quick google suggests that the measles vaccine (not mmr) was introduced in 1968, so it's possible that those of us that didn't have mmr ( and I'm not sure that I did, given that I'm in my 30s) may have been immunised against measles. I know that I 'm immune to rubella, but I had the illness as a child, so it's probably a natural immunity.

Thanks folks, sometimes a stroppy midwife and an upset pregnant woman don't mix do they!

I'm hoping I was immunised, mum said my older brother had measles and German measles so I'm hoping I must have been immunised otherwise I would have caught it?

I am in north Wales and my lo had measles last week, she is 17 months old and had her MMR jab at 12 months. It is only 95% effective. Thankfully she didn't have it to badly probably because she's had the vaccine.
The reason they don't vaccinate before 12 months is because most adults are immune and if you have had the measles yourself or are vaccinated then your baby will be born with immunity for the first year of its life so don't panic

Babies will be born with some passive immunity if you have either had measles in the past or been vaccinated. Unfortunately it doesn't make them completely immune for the first 12 months until they get the vaccnation. The amount and type of antibodies passed on depends on different factors such as natural or immunised immunity. You will also pass on antibodies to help protect baby against other infectious diseases. The reason babies are given the MMR at 12 months is because immunity built up to these types of disease decreases slower than say, whopping cough, which is given at 2 months.

To be on the safe side take extra precautions, and try and breastfeed, this will definitely help build up stronger immunity.

Theyve started a new immunisation program in uk as of next week recommending parents to get kids jabbed if not already had mmr and also offering it babies 6 months plus to try and prevent it spreading more so and too prevent ill health if baby hapoens to contract virus. Your immunity is checked in your booking bloods for mmr xxx
