Hi Ladies,

I've been prescribed Mefenamic Acid for chronic period pains, but all over the net it says that you shouldnt take them if you are TTC?
A gynae prescribed them to me, and knows the situation. Can anyone shed any light please?

Hays,
I have been prescribed this too and specifically asked the GP if it was safe to take. Her reply was as it is prescribed for me to take during my periods, it was only going to be taken when I know I'm not pregnant. Therefore, it is safe as it's effects wear off within a few hours.

Maybe the effects people are talking about is if you take it in general as a painkiller at any time of month, but according to the GP who prescribed me it, it's fine used during AF.

Thanks lovely, AF due tomorrow so i shall be giving it a go!

Hi,

I have been taking mefenamic acid for about 2-3 years for painful periods. I have been TTC for 9 months now with no luck. I had recently read the same about infertility being on mefenamic acid and from what I understand it thins out the lining of the womb, something to do with prostaglandin levels, which makes the attachment of a fertilized egg difficult.

I had an appointment this week with my GP and told her what I had read, she found it interesting however couldn't shed any light on it (helpful). I have taken the decision not to take it anymore, I'm going to take paracetamol every 4 hours when the pain is bad and if I need further pain relief then I'll go back to the dr's.

I have also written to the MHRA to find out more about their study: mhra.gov.uk/home/groups/l-unit1/documents/websiteresources/con2030180.pdf

I will keep you posted. x

Excellent thanks hun!! I recently had a very bad episode with my pains which left me in A&E, he told me I should be taking the Mefenamic Acid more often before I'm due my period and throughout, but I never due, purely because I've read about it not being good for TTC.

Hays- i have been on mefenamic acid for almost 6 months my GP agreed that i should stop it before starting icsi tho as it can make the womb lining too thin to make implantation possible. GL:hugs:
