Hi,

I was diagnosed with GD a few weeks ago and last week was prescribed metformin. I have been taking it since friday and have upped my dose to 2 yesterday as it doesnt seem to be making me feel ill.
The only thinng I can report is that it has played havoc with my BGL!! Is it normal for it to go a bit crazy at first? I was worried that it would make my BGL too low and I would end up having a hypo as I didnt think my readings were too bad but it has gone the other way!!!
Does what time of the day affect it? I normally take my tablets with my evening meal as that is my main meal of the day. I just want to get this under control for my baby girl x

Which manufacture is it? Some are known to be bad and don't work. I have to take the Glumetza name brand. I had the Apotex generic, but it gave me horrible stomach cramps (I think they were worse than induced labor pain).

I took metformin for my Gestational Diabetes, but I also have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, so I was on metformin from the very beginning. The lowest my sugar ever got while I was testing was about 85. You will know if your sugar is too low because you will start to sweat. If this happens, drink a glass of orange juice.

Did your doctor tell you to take your tablets at the same time? I've always taken one in the morning with breakfast and one with dinner for a total of 2000mg a day. Taking too much at once might be what is making your BGL so low.

My reproductive endocrinologist handles my PCOS and he also handled my gestational diabetes. He does not like generics. He claims they do not have the effect as the name brand. He likes his patients to take the name brand, Glucophage, unless they can't afford it.

Maybe your GD is just getting worse, so the Metformin isn't enough. You may need to also take insulin. I've read that usually Metformin alone isn't enough for GD.

My consultant said it takes a few weeks to see the effects properly of the metformin so I will just have to keep an eye on it for now and watch what I eat. If I eat even wholemeal pasta and just a small amount then it goes a bit nuts!! I am ok with a small amount of potato so having cottage pie and veggies for my evening meal tonight and maybe a salad for lunch. Just had a bacon sandwich for breakfast!!
