i was in o'briens sandwich bar yesterday and they have a microwave set out on the floor and i watched 3 women heat their babies bottles in it, i wasn't sure i should do the same so i just asked for a cup of boiling water, but is it ok to microwave bottles? surely these women wouldnt have done it if it wern't ok? just curious so i know for next time im out!

Microwaving them cracks the bottles, not sure of any other dangers though xx

the main reason you should not do it is hot spots in the milk cos microwaves dont heat the milk evenly if that makes sense x

Also.. what is that chemical called? The only way it is released is when you heat the plastic, i.e microwaving bottles. The chemical will go into the milk, and into your baby. Also, theres the thing about hot spots and uneven heating. I would steer clear of it hun :)

Also.. what is that chemical called?

BPA..

I use BPA-free bottles and always microwave. At this point, its figured out to perfection and Ive never burned her. My OH however, will only use a pot. An he overheats the milk 75% of the time. :dohh:

I use BPA free bottles and have microwaved a couple of times aswell

Ok hope I don't get shot down for this but Faith had her milk at room temperature as a baby but once she was on cows milk I use to heat it in the microwave. I know you're not mean't to I didn't do it for long and would really shake it so there were no hot spots. I just found it so much quicker x

my midwife told me to microwave the bottles but I knew nothing about BPA - what if I've hurt him!?! we only microwave one bottle a day but I'm going to get some BPA free bottles for the first feed now. I feel like an awful Mum but I thought that if the midwife told me to do it, it'd be ok!

i microwave the bottles, i make sure i give them a good shake before feeding. heating a bottle in the microwave for 40sec wont harm the bottle mine go in the microwave for 8mins when sterilising
what to remember when out and about is microwaves have different watts so adjust the time you heat accordingly

Ive always been under the understanding that it causes hot spots... I'd rather be safe then sorry, I just run the bottles under hot water.

It can also create hot pockets because it doesn't warm the bottles evenly. We always just as for a cup of hot water--it warms the bottles quickly enough

people use microwave steralisers so that would release that whatcha-ma-call-it chemical anyway...

i used to use a jug to het Rhiannon's bottles up untill she was 4 months but they would always leak or take to long... now i just micro them for 30 secs shake like a rare one and she drinks them fine

go with that you find easiest hun

but microwaving them wont harm LO so long as its not too hot

i used to microwave rosies bottles mw said its ok as long as you shake them lots to avoid hot spots, but everyone as different opinion on everything so i only listen to mw's or hv's
bottles should withstand microwave heat as why have microwave sterilisers.
sometimes we can over analyse what we do,
common sense is the key really.
x

Interesting thread. I have a 'thing' about microwaves :( I just dont like them. We have one and I'd be lying if I said I never use it but I avoid it most of the time. I call microwaving 'nukeing'!! ....I guess thats my 'issue'.

I've heard this BPA mentioned before - which bottles are free of it?? I BF but I do have bottles for expressed feeds and I'll be bottle feeding at some point.

x

I always microwave them for 40 secs then shake them hard :)

I put bottles in a jug of boiling water..! but when the LO is screaming his head off at 3am..I do put them in microwave 4 20 secs 2 take the chill off..! x

i use the microwave and always have :D and will if i have another aslong as you shake them well so theres no hot bits :D

I microwave too, (used to warm in jug of boiling water) I always make sure the milk is well mixed before giving to Jack so there are no 'hot spots', but his milk is never HOT anyway, just over lukewarm. I always test before he has it to make sure. As for the chemical, & this is just a question, would it not be released if placed in boiling water too?
