(I hope I'm posting in the correct forum)

I'm wondering if it's possible to have a midwife AND my OB to be in the same room? I'm not having a home/birthing center birth.

Midwife - more of for support, coaching, and giving me tips on how to speed things along, breathing techniques, pain tolerating techniques and stuff. The only thing she won't do is deliver.

I know my DH, and he has the tendency to fluster quite a bit when it comes to stress, emergency situation, a bit of a frantic environment, etc, so I'm slightly worried that he won't be able to be a full coach for me. I have no issues with him being in the room, and if he feels kind of panicky, nervous, he can just step out of the room. That way he's not "responsible" for the coaching part. He'll be very excited to see the baby and cutting the cord, but the coaching...I'm not too sure.

Of course I'll be taking the birthing classes prior.

If that's the case and I can have a midwife at the same time, how does it work money-wise? I could in theory ask the hospital if they can provide a midwife.

This is my first child, so naturally I am a little bit indecisive of my choices. I was told that the hospital that I'm delivering at is very similar to a birthing center...as in calm environment, allowing the baby be on the mom as soon as he/she is born, you can choose whatever music you want playing, whatever TV show you want playing, whatever you want...the doctor will follow your orders. Want natural vs. drugs? No problem. Want very little drugs? No problem. Want a "shut up and deliver doc"? No problem. It's just in a medical environment vs "Home" type.

TYIA!

Have you thought about having a doula instead of a midwife? Doulas are specifically there for support.

For both my births I had a midwife and OB present. Midwife stayed throughout, giving support and coaching me, but when the shit hit the fan during my second birth the OB took over and recognised something was wrong when the midwife hadnt. I really liked having both there as they made me feel safe in different ways.

Is it possible for you just to have a MW unless there is a problem and then for am OB to be called in if needed? In my opinion and very limmited experience MWs are much better at the whole thing when things are going well, OBs are great for medical complications/emergencies but actually understand the 'natural' birthing process less and are in more of a hurry to give unnecessary interventions. So having one close by but not in the room would be my choice.

The hospital I'm going to give birth in will have midwife and nurses be with me until OB gets there, and even then the midwife and nurses stay.

Where my mom gave birth there's always an OB present when it's a first child, but for 2nd children+ it's the midwife but there is always an OB available if something should go wrong.

It would depend on the hospital and their policies and what staff they have available. One of the nearest hospitals to me doesn't even have midwives on their staff lists.
