When did all you breastfeeding mama's start taking the mini pill after giving birth? My midwife told me I can start taking it whenever I want, but then I read something online about waiting until 6 week PP or waiting until your period returns? So now I'm not sure when to start taking it

TIA xx

There is a small chance you could affect your milk supply taking it too early - "For most mothers, progestin-only forms of contraception do not cause problems with milk supply if started after the 6th-8th week postpartum and if given at normal doses. However, there are many reports (most anecdotal but nevertheless worth paying attention to) that some women do experience supply problems with these pills, so if you choose this method you still need to proceed with some caution." - kellymom

You need to wait till you have a period if you want it to be effective straight away. If you are taking it midcycle (or don't have a cycle) then it is officially not effective as a birth control for 7 days. The specific instructions about this should be on the leaflet that comes in the pack (just incase I'm wrong!)

My experience is from 5.5 years ago but I was told just to start taking it as soon as I wanted, there was no need to wait for the first period. It didn't affect my milk supply and I never got a period whilst on it, the main reason I loved taking that pill! I was on it for some four years until we decided to try and ttc again.

I was told I could start it after 6 weeks. It didn't alter my supply at all. I have an oversupply so I can't really speak to that. No AF for me yet....whether that's the pill or not.....I dunno.

Thanks girls! I just started taking it at 14 days post partum. Although now I am second guessing the mini pill. While I was looking for info online about it, I found a lot of stories about women becoming pregnant despite breastfeeding and taking the mini pill properly!! Definitely going to be chatting to my GP about this

Do you know which mini pill it is? Some need taking at the same time each day (within a three he window) so it's much easier to mess up your timings. However cerazette can be taken within a 12hr window.

I'm taking microlut and it has a 3 hour window, I just sit it next to my toothbrush and take it before bed, it's the only way to remind myself and is usually at the same time each night
