Mixture Of Whole Milk & Formula - Early!?

Hi,

LO is practically 6 months old now and i want to start mixing his formula with whole milk.

Is there any recommended way to do this.

Also would you think it is safe to do so, i know they recommend cows milk at AROUND a yr, but i feel id like to introduce LO to it earlier?

Cow's milk isn't considered safe as a drink (it's fine in cereal and cooking) until 1 year for several reasons. Firstly, it doesn't contain the necessary nutrients that a young baby needs. Secondly, it is very allergenic. Thirdly, too much cow's milk protein can cause intestinal bleeding and damage. Is there any particular reason you want to introduce it earlier?

Well basically, my mum is pushing for me to start, my nephew who is 6 weeks older than my LO is having cows milk exclusively, its brought to the boil then cooled, they started that at around 5months.

Im not keen to be honest so have thought about mixing the two.

Im guessing that maybe its not a good idea. I didnt really think it was but wanted to get some opinions from other mums first!

As freckleonear said, it's not really recommended for drinking until they are 1. We used in it cooking etc from 6 months though. My nan started on at me about cow's milk when my son was about 6 weeks old, it's what they used to do but it's not recommended any more x

Mums eh? The older generation used to use cow's milk a lot as they didn't have many other options, but we're lucky to have better formula milks nowadays. Just remind them that infant mortality has gone down a lot!

Yeh my mum used cows milk with my brother from 4 months in 1964 (as she lost her milk due to stress) and she said they used to add vitamin drops to it.

But now we have formula instead hence why they recommend 1 year, better for bubs x

Im looking forward to not having to make up formula anymore.

So can they go on just cows milk at 1 year or is it best to still give a follow on formula??

Ye, thats it, you hit the nail on the head. I guess they dont know any better and her 6 kids survived on cows milk and weaning at 6 weeks so it MUST be ok for our LO's too

I think i may take the route of 'Yes mum, im doing it'...but not

So a year is the recommended age right...Ill leave it for now then!
