My daughter is 5 months + 1 week old. She was on similac sensitive and was doing well on it, but for months ive been dying for her to switch to another formula because I actually found out similac sensitive has sugar and corn syrup as its 2 MAIN ingredients, which makes up most of the formula (which is probably why she loves it) Ive been reading so much on how BAD corn syrup is for babys, that it can lead to ADD, and is linked to childhood obesity (that goes for sugar too) and more. I feel like im loading her with crap from the start of her life. She gained 4 lb in one month on the stuff!!!! My doctor said I can try a switch if I wanted but if she stops eating to switch back.

The problem is, she absolutely will not let any other formula near her mouth, she HATEDDD the taste of enfimel and good start. and gagged and chocked the second she had 1 small sip. I have also tried similac advance which she is currently been on for 4 days. She doesnt mind the taste, but since shes started it, She has been extremely gassy and spitting up large amounts every time I burp her (which is 2 or 3 times in between one feeding on the advance) shes constantly passing gas and bothered and then she stops eating because she doesnt feel well. She went from drinking 6 oz a feeding to 2 or 3 oz.

I Just dont know what to do, I dont know If I should continue on the similac advance even though shes spitting up alot and just see if she gets used to it, maybe another week or so or go back to the sugar crap similac sensitive. I feel like im torn between my daughter having health problems now and in the future from sugar and corn syrup or her barely eating now!!

Moms, please, I need advice on what to do. I dont know who else to ask. What would you do ? I really appreciate it so much!!

Hey there.

Just beacuse your baby is on a formula containing corn syrup it does not mean that she will get ADD or be obese in the futrue. The studies that you have been reading have shown that corn-syrup MAY LEAD TO A HIGHER RISK of these problems occuring. Im sure that the risk is only ever so slightly increased. The media like to exaggerate everything and make things seem alot worse than they are to sell their stories. Say for instance that the likelyhood of a breast-fed child having ADD in the future was 2% and the likely hood of a formula fed child given a corn syrup containing formula getting ADD was 4% then you can garuntee that the article headline would be "BABIES FED CORN SYRUP BASED FORMULA ARE TWICE AS LIKELY TO DEVELOPE ADD IN CHILDHOOD". Although this is basically true, when you look at the raw fact, there is only a 2% difference in RISK of getting ADD between a breastfed baby and a corn-syrup formula fed baby.
So this my have seemed like a long winded answer, but I would say if your baby is happy and contented then stick with the Similac Sensitvie. If it caused definative and documented harm to babies then it would not be available for consumption! xxx

^ wss. and if you are having trouble switching to another formula if you feel that strongly about perhaps you should wean slowly. make it 3/4 previous formula and 1/4 new formula and slowly go up to being totally new formula to get her system used to the change. after all if you start a new diet it affects you too so it reasons that it would affect your child.

Not meaning to dismiss your concerns but I thought it was only high fructose corn syrup that was bad. Corn syrup is pretty innocuous I think :) honestly if your LO is doing ok with the similac I would stick with it, especially if she is not happy with the change.

Hey- don't panic too much - every formula has to have 3 things a protein source, a fat source, and a carbohydrate (sugar) source- and although the corn syrup may not be 'ideal" i don't think that its going to harm your baby.

If you are really set on the change i personally would gradually introduce it over a couple of weeks making one once of the new formula and gradually increasing in by an ounce every couple of days. What you describe is pretty much what i went through when i changed sophies formula- you have to weigh up what the risk vs reward is - is your daughter that uncomfortable that its not worth it?

No formula will actively harm your baby- and baby need the sugars to grow- so she will be getting a lot of sugar in her milk whether it be lactose or corn syrup- even breast milk is very very sweet.

Follow your gutt instinct, but dont read too much into some of these studies they can be a whole load of rubbish.
