Moses basket in cot on mattress or not

So we have set up our cot in our bedroom as we were clearing out the spare room and it made sense to put it in place even though it is a little early. We were given a brand new moses basket set and want baby to sleep in that just for a little more security. We didn't buy a stand as we were told the moses basket can just sit inside the cot but my question is should it sit on top of the mattress of the cot or should I take out the mattress while the moses basket is in the cot?

We used the stand at first, but then as we were 'training' baby to go in cot we put the basket in there, just on top of the mattress and that was fine until she was ready for the cot.

im putting Moses basket in the cot on the mattress aswell life so much easier. Also carry Moses basket and baby up separate as my midwife advises, she knew someone who carried baby up in the basket and he slipped out! argh!!
