Moses baskets

Anyone bought a Moses basket yet? Where did you get it and what type of stand did you get?

I don't have a clue how long the baby is in it or anything so not sure what I'm looking for although I quite like the idea of a rocking stand.

I've seen one on John lewis website and its lovely but the reviews say the rocking stand has less support in the middle so the basket sags when the baby is in it. Doesnt sound great to me! Xx

I was thinking of not getting one at all and just using a cot from birth. Is this bad? Why do u need a Moses basket?

We got one (cant remember where from!) and dd was in it for a few months. It was handy for when she was newborn so we could have her sleep in the living room.. And she just looked cosy! (and no, i dont see anything wrong with using the cot from birth if thats what you want to do!)
We will just be using dds basket snd stand. Its not a rocking stand, i dont think theyre necessary tbh. I think ours was 60 quid.. Wouldnt spend anymore than that! I think theyre all pretty much the same, just with different designs =)

Ours is from asda, was £25 in the baby event and the stand was bought for us by OHs mum as asda had sold out, but isn't a rocking stand, just a normal one. It's really quite sturdy and pretty to look at too

We had a Moses basket last time but never used it. They're quite wobbly, especially with a rocking stand. If you get a front-to-back rocking one, you need to make sure baby is balanced right, otherwise they might sleep head down or feet down at too much on an angle. I wouldn't trust the side-to-side rocking ones as LO had a swing crib and even at a few days old would sometimes roll to one side when being rocked. With a Moses basket, I'd be scared it would topple over.
Anyway, a crib or sidecar crib work just as well from newborn and will last much longer, so I wouldn't spend the money on a (decent) Moses basket for the sale of a few weeks. Just my personal opinion of course.
Btw, you can save lots of money by buying a crib (or Moses basket) second hand on eBay or Gumtree and just buying a new mattress. We got a beautiful wooden M&P's swing crib for £8!!

My best friend gave me hers. It's a Clair de lune on a rocking stand.

I prob wouldn't have bothered buying one though if she'd not given that to me and just let baby sleep in carry cot of pram downstairs & then cot at night upstairs.

If you have a travel system with a carry cot I would just buy a cot & cut out the Moses basket to save on money as you'll have 3 things then that do the same job!

We arnt getting a rocking stand. With DS it was sooo annoying. Obviously baby has to sleep at the bottom of the basket so it was constantly tipped up, and if he moved it would make an awful banging on the wooden floor and wake him up!

Depends what you need it for. If it's all you've got room for, maybe consider a crib instead as they're more sturdy, normally slightly larger but take up the same kind of space as a moses. Otherwise a cot is fine, as is a travel cot. However a moses basket is flexible in that you can move them around easily. I know of some people who have 2 stands and 1 basket, and simply transfer baby and basket to wherever they need, with 1 stand upstairs, 1 downstairs.

I actually have 2 from Earl - he was too large at 6 weeks and moved out of them then (1 is at my Mums at the moment - reminds me I want it back lol) and while I did get them down for Eddy to use, he never went in it because he didn't fit (was 10lb14oz at birth lol). He went straight into a cot in our room as we had the room for it. To answer a PP, no it's not wrong. Babies will sleep wherever is comfortable. Just remember that a cot is a wide open space to a baby so a good swaddle is essential so they don't feel too lost or abandoned.

Re: stands, personally wouldn't go for the rocking ones. Just a paranoia thing for me. When baby gets past about 8 weeks they can really throw their weight and I'd be worried about them tipping or rocking too much. Also, they get used to the sensation, and when the cot doesn't move later on, it can cause problems. Best, for me anyway, to avoid these kinds of issues.

I think they're unnecessary to be honest.

I've got king size bed so for first few weeks baby will be next to me in her Sleepyhead Matress (John Lewis) then she'll be into cot bed next to my bed at some point (5-6m old)

I registered for one. We are putting up the full size crib in our bed room. I hope to put the moses basket in the crib for the first few weeks. I think the crib maybe too big and I know baby likes to feel closed in. Also, I like the idea of being able to put baby anywhere I am while sleeping. If Im in the living room I will put moses basket on the living room table, etc. The family I used to nanny for had one the first three months their baby boy was born and i used to all the time . Loved it.

That's what I was thinking Jcliff, they're quite portable. But a pp also mentioned the carrycot of a travel system, that sounds like an idea too xx

I've just ordered mine tonight, it's white and Baige with a teddy on the front 46.99 from kiddecare.com I think it looks lovely, and have ordered a white stand from argos to go with it ;-) xxx

Carry cot or pram, bouncy chair, swing, travel cot.

There are literally hundreds of options lol. It depends on your budget, your space and how long you would like to get use out of it for. I used the pram for the first few weeks with Eddy, and had a rocker chair for him too which he loved.

I'm thinking of ordering the Suzy Zoo one from kiddicare, it's so cute, great for team yellow as the design is white with a cute yellow fluffy duck sleeping.
SIL is giving us her rocking stand, I know we might not be using the basket long but I like the idea of one for baby to sleep in and be moved easily from living room to our bedroom in the first few weeks before they go into their cot.

That's what I was thinking bubbles. I was going to buy a bouncy chair too but didn't think it was ok to put the in that for a few weeks cos they need to be laid flat? Xx

As someone mentioned just using carrycot from the pram, please double check your particular carrycot is suitable for overnight sleeping. Quite a few of them aren't without changing the mattress that's in it. We'll be using a crib in our room for the first few months. My cat would see a Moses basket as a giant cat scratcher I think!! I wouldn't feel comfortable putting baby straight into her cot, but only because we don't have room for her cot to be in our room with us. I might keep an eye out for a cheap second hand Moses basket to use downstairs, otherwise I have a bouncy chair, and the carrycot from my pram is suitable for overnight sleeping. x
