I know there are a few ladies on here who's children are or have been taking movicol for a period of time. I just really need some advice. My daughter has been taking it for 2 weeks, one sachet a day, and it's has really helped in the sense that she is no longer upset at doing a poo, she is doing one every day (though it does come in 3 or 4 bits rather than going all at once) and she's just generally alot happier about the whole thing.
I just wondered how I should go about getting her off it eventually etc, I'm happy for her to be using it a little longer but obviously I'd like to get her to go everyday on her own without holding it in and hurting herself. She didn't have any yesterday because we couldn't get her to drink it but she's just filled her nappy so wondering whether she needs a whole sachet a day? I'm so confused I have no idea what to do for the best!

I think it depends on why she is on it in the first place. Our peadiatrician said that when it is time for Nathan to come off it he will just gradually reduce the amount slowly over a couple of weeks and see how he gets on. He is on it for constipation and stool holding and we were told he would likely be on it for a long time, it has already been around 5 months at 2-4 sachets a day.

I'm not sure, my daughter was on 3 sachets a day and I just weaned her off it by giving 2 sachets a day, and then 1 a day and then stopping altogether. You could always give her half a sachet a day and see how she does on that.

Thanks for your replies. The doc prescribed it for holding her poos and constipation, she said to give 1 sachet a day for 2 weeks and go back if she doesn't show any signs of it helping. She definately doesn't need more than 1 sachet because her poos are already quite runny (lol sorry!). She is alot happier about doing them now and tells me she is doing them and happy for me to change her when she used to hate it so I think it's definately helping psychologically. I think I will try the weaning off and see how she gets on.

Laura, once your daughter was weaned off them were her problems solved? I am worried about ending up back at square one. xx

Can I ask you ladies how old your toddlers are please? We were given movicol by an out of hours doctor after taking our son to community hospital in agony over Christmas but since then our gp has said he's too young -18 months - and needs to come off it. It's the only thing that's worked for him so I'm very reluctant to

Sam went on movicol in august and has just finished at the end of Jan. I was in no hurry as there is nothing harmful in it - I kept him on the first dosage (he started on two sachets a day) for a month and then reduced to one sachets a day for a month then a half for a month then 1/3 then stopped - he goes every two days now and I he doesn't I was told to give him a dose. He has been three weeks without movicol now - yay!!!!

Thank goodness I found this thread! Isobelle was put on movicol 2.5weeks ago now, 1 sachet a day for constipation and tbh it's fab! She goes sooo much easier now and to not see her in pain or discomfort is sooo good. However the paediatric doctor said to use 1 sachet per day, but not for how long and I can't pop in/ring up because it was a hospital doctor we were seeing regarding a different matter who asked us about her poo. So should I contact my own GP and just clarify?

Plus, her poo can be quite runny now, yet sometimes more firm and squidgy, is the runny stuff normal?

Xx

P.s Isobelle is almost 2 for a PP ^^

Paige got prescribed movicol a few months ago, and i havent given her it for a while. She manages to poop by herself easily but her poops are still so hard! I occasionally pop half a sachet in her drink because I feel terrible that she needs to pass such hard stools.. But does she need it if she is managing okay? I must add, that half a sachet even once a week turns her poop into complete mush for a day!

I think she's managing because of the movicol though so im worried about stopping it because of the struggle she had before. Ill talk to my pharmacist and Dr x

Nathan is three next month and the pead said he would not give it to a child under 2, he is an excellent pead too and I really trust him. I have heard of children under two having it though on here.
