Just wanted to share my roller coaster labour story!
On the night of the 21st I experienced a strange persistent pain in my lower left abdomen. I'd been feeling it occasionally and describe it as an ovulation or cyst type pain. Nothing like contractions.
Anyways, it wasn't going away and when I woke up the next morning it was still there so I called up to the mat ward and then told me to come in. I got to triage just before 8am for assessment. The nurses clearly didn't think it was much to worry about but they hooked me up to the monitors and noticed that I was experiencing contractions. They still weren't concerned but they called in the doctor on call and he checked me over.
I was 1-2cm so I had to stay for more monitoring. When he came back at 1:15pm, I was 4 cm! I started to panic a bit and called my husband to come up. They said if I was dialating, there was nothing they could do to stop labour so they just tried to prepare me for the birth of a six week early preemie.
When the doctor came back at 6pm I had only progressed another cm or two so he broke my waters. Let me tell you ladies, I will never be letting that happen again without an epidural!
Less that two hours later my little bundle was crying on my chest and the doctor lifted him up for my husband to declare that he was a boy! We were team yellow and we're so happy with the surprise, We were both expecting a girl.
He was taken over to the preemie team and they announced that he weighed 5lbs 5oz! I was expecting around 4lbs so I was really happy.
I'm writing this now sitting in the nursery watching him in his incubator. Apparently he may be out tomorrow, only four days after birth. I've never been so amazed in my life. So grateful for the nurses and doctors and for my super strong, incredible little boy!
