Had my baby boy 3 days ago, measuring 8lb 11 at 38+6. Im really satisfied with the labour despite it being opposite of my water birth plan. Started contractions tuesday every 10 minutes, by wed were every 5 minutes and on TENS machine, rang in and was told not close enough and could go on for a while. Eventually by thursday with no sleep for 48h and still every 5 minutes rocked up to hospital to beg for some drugs to knock me out, was knackered. told not in established labour, agreed to let me have some diamorphine to get some rest, was worried how i would cope after so long labouring. Checked at 2am and 4cm dilated (epidural requested!) given aromatherapy bath and some gas while waiting for epidural, the bath was lovely! At 5-6am tried 3 times unsuccessfully to get epidural in, trying desperately to not let them see i was getting urges to push. Checked and 8cm, waters bulging and burst while examined, clear fluid. given a patient controlled pain control pump (remifentanyl PCA) and the gas, pushed for 45 minutes and needed an episiotomy. Born crying at 8am, Very alert and interested in everything around him!
The PCA is quite new, the remifentanyl is an opiate drug which acts within 30s -1min so you push the buton at the onset of a contraction and wears off after few minutes so minimal effect on the baby. I would reccommend to others.
We thought we were prepared for a baby but it turns out we are clueless! breastfeeding hurts, sleep is non existent, stitches stinging, but loving him so much i almost hurts!

Congratulations, it does get better I promise. That pain relief sounds good :-)

Congratulations. Great weight too! It does get easier.....I promise. X

congratulations it gets better :) i had an episiotomy and a 1st degree tear at the top and im now 1 month on and healed.

Congrats ...so agree no matter how many books or webistes i have read nothing quite prepares you for a newborn!
xx
