My dog jumped out the window *small update*

Hope she is ok. Keep us updated.

Maybe she just got spooked out by something and didn't truly realise the height she was at. We have a border and he is always climbing ( not convinced he think he's a dog lol) He has taken a few tumbles after falling off things but not that were or anything over 4ft.

This might be worth a look, I've heard they have amazing results. Hope she's ok. x

*Update* The vet who came and made a housecall thinks we need to get it xrayed as it is quite possibly a broken but he taped it back up and said it was good she was relaxing and suggested we wait until morning to avoid the cost of an emergency after hours vet and so long as we didn't let her walk on it she would be fine. So it's 8am and I've just called into work and OH is running to work to do a couple of things and should be home within the hour so I'm just laying with her til then.

This is the last thing we need right now - it seems like as soon as we get our finances together some big emergency cost comes along and we're stuck making up for it for months which is frusterating with a baby on the way. Obviously shes worth it, shes like a family member, I just wish dogs healthcare were free in Canada too! Or that I was back in Thailand and this would cost under $50 lol.

Has anyone here had a dog whose leg broke? I'm looking for a range on how much it will cost.

Thanks soo much

Depends on where the break is, how bad the break is and if you can just place a simple cast on it. Its hard to say, it could be a few hundred dollars to a few thousand easy. Though I do now an amputation(not going to happen) is about $5000 so for sure under that... It also depends on your area and vet because they can all charge different amounts. THis is why we pay an additional $50 a month for pet insurance :)

Yeah I'm really wishing we had pet insurance right about now! We got her as an adult though and apparently you need to get insurance by the time theyre 3 or 4, but I'm going to look into getting it for our younger guy whose about 1.5. Poor Ari doesn't know why Annie won't play with him ahaha.

We have to go back to the vet at 2 for the xrays so weve got a little bit more of a waiting game. We noticed when we untaped her leg that her dew claw was removed in the incident, that must have stung!

My mom is a cat breeder...she had one of her cats break their leg....
it was a bad break, and required surgery and pins in the leg etc. It was over $2000 (we live in Canada)...but again my moms cat had a bad break! So if your dog just has a clean break in the bone, than the healing etc might not be as extensive.

Awhh your moms poor cat! She must have been in a lot of pain with a break that bad :(
I called the vets office and they told me to plan on about $400 for the initial exam and xrays and they couldn't give me a ballpark figure of how much it would cost to fix but said I would probably be sent to a vet about 40 minutes away if it were broken since they only do very minor surgeries there. I'm transferring $1000 and my friend works at the vet office and said I could put anything we can't afford on her account and pay it off slowly. I hate debt so if it ends up more than $1000 then I'll probably just go home and transfer more money and pay it all off.

Luckily my OH just got a tax return for about $1000 and, while we were planning on paying off his line of credit to avoid paying any interest, it really couldnt have come at a better time, hopefully it will be enough to cover all of her vet bills.

Well hopefully your dog doesn't have a break:( Poor thing. Vet bills can add up quickly unfortunatly...but hopefully this isn't your case. This kind of stuff...always happens at the most inconvenient time eh?

I have two dogs and sometimes they just do silly things. I think she may have been freaked out by a noise or something and ran (jumped out the window). I don't think she is suicidal ~~ dogs are always happy as long as you give them enough attention. But do take her to the vet right away, or emergency vet clinics ... you don't want anything to get infected inside her wounds.

And yeah - they are very expensive =( that's why we put $ into an emergency fund every month just for their vet bills.

Hey! Sorry to hear about puppy! Poor thing must be in such discomfort!

I suggest going to the Animal hospital in Guelph...it's not far from home. And most importantly, it's where a LOT of vets get their training as it's a teaching hospital.

The advantages: The staff are there SOLELY for the care and betterment of the animals (I find a lot of vets are only in it for the money) and their fees are lower than vets with their own practices.

We had to put my old family dog down in 2010 and instead of making the decision with his regular vet, we took him to the Guelph animal hospital and let them advise us on the correct plan of action. They said he needed to be put down as there was no guaranteed successful treatment for the tumor he had. Our options were to spend thousands (literally) on treating him to only sustain his life (at best) but he'd still be suffering, or to put him down. It was one of the most excruciatingly painful days I've experienced but it was necessary and I knew we were making an informed decision.

The staff in Guelph are really nice too...they seem to genuinely care about every animal that comes in.

Hoping the best for your pup. I agree with the above that vet bills can really add up when you least expect. But does sound like a good break on the tax return timing. Maybe its nothing serious and you can still put some of it toward his line of credit. (Things always seem to come up when you think you're getting ahead...We paid our car off early so we could cut insurance and interest costs, and the engine went the next day..) Hopefully its just a little sprained or something and she will be back to 100% in no time.. Good luck!!

Thats where theyll be sending us to get it fixed if it is broken. My friend who works at the vet office also works in Guelph as shes going to school there to become a vet - she is really picky when it comes to vets and said this one is amazing and doesn't do unnecessary tests at all and shes advised them that I'm pregnant and can't necessarily afford it. She's been to pretty much every vet in Burlington (don't EVER go to Askeys on fairview!!)

They did say it will cost extra for sedation if she needs it, since they have to move it quite a bit to get good xrays but do you know if its possible for my OH to just go in with her while she gets the xrays? She will let us touch it and move it in any direction but wouldnt let my brother or dad and I would like to avoid that extra expense. Plus I've heard it can be bad for their breathing and since shes getting to be an older dog I would rather avoid it

I would say they will use minimal sedation for an x-ray ...probably just enough to make sure she isn't in a huge amount of pain. Either way, if she has broken it, sedation will be a must if she needs surgery (in the extreme case)
When it comes to x-rays and having your OH in there with your dog, every vet is different...no harm in asking, but generally they dont allow anyone in there with the dog besides the vet and technicians. But I would ask - it may be beneficial to your pup!

With regards to my moms cat, they did surgery and had to keep her monitored in the vets office for a few days(this is where vet bills start to add up), her whole leg was shaved and she had quite alot of stitches etc from the surgery. Not trying to scare you, but just thought you should be prepared at what you MIGHT have to go through - and again...this is the EXTREME scenario...my mom's cat had caught her leg in the cage, and twisted it so bad and it was caught in the cage for 24 hrs...awful...so this was a bad bad case!
Anyways..enough about that - I don't want to scare you...I am sure your puppy will be fine...if she can put weight on her leg it won't be that bad I'm sure!
HUGS!! Keep us updated!!!

Which vet office does your friend work at or recommend in Burlington? We haven't changed vets yet since we moved from Milton (and I can't stand the vet himself...I really just like the vet tech - she'll be totally honest with us and has saved us loads of cash).

I agree with jenmcn1 about the sedation. It'll probably be mild since they won't need to put pup under for too long to get the x-rays. I'm guessing the vet will say no to your OH going in but it definitely doesn't hurt to ask. Also, if your pup needs surgery, she'll need to be under anesthesia anyway. Keep in mind, she'd be going to Guelph and they take EVERY step necessary to take care of the animals. I think they use respirators for animals when they are sedated to ensure that they are still breathing normally. I wouldn't worry too much (easier said than done, I know).

Take care! xoxo

Hey I'm not sure where you are in Canada or if they do this around there, but I think my vet's office can set up payment plans for certain things if you don't have all the money up front. But I'm not positive on that, it's just something I've heard from others who needed help. I have three dogs and vets are so expensive! I love them though and you always find a way :)

Well we're at home without our dog. The vet thinks shes fractured BOTH front paws and predicts shell need surgery at Guelph. Shes just there now getting xrays and theyve put a catheter in since she still had yet to use the bathroom. They said best case scenario is shes fractured one paw and it wont be too bad and itll cost us about $1000 to fix and worst case scenario is shes fractured both and will need surgery in which case itll be $3000 plus :(

LOVED the vet, shes from Newfoundland and lived in Halifax for a couple years so my OH was very happy with that. She was very realistic and managed to (somehow) put us at ease. Mrs Mystery - Headon Forest at Dundas and Walkers, so right by you!

Aww, thinking of you and your pup and sending positive healing vibes! I guess the next mystery is why she jumped out the window from such a height (and making sure she never does that again!). I have also had a $3000 vet bill for my cat so I know a bit of what you are going through - he swallowed an earplug which got lodged in his duodenum! They got it out no problem and he recovered beautifully, but the bill - OUCH!

MaybeP, best wishes for smooth surgery and a quick recovery for your darling pup!! Keep in touch and let us know how it all goes.

xo

We just walked in from the vets and got some great news - her paws arent fractured at all, she just has really really bad sprains, possibly the worst theyve seen. Theres still a possibility she may need surgery for her tendons because they stretched so far but theyre giving her a week to start walking. They gave us anti inflammatory medication and pain medication and told us to do cold compresses and not let her run or go hard on them for atleast 2 weeks. The vet was shocked and had to get 2 other vets to look and make sure she wasnt missing anything. Everyone at the office loved her and couldnt believe what a great dog she was or how well she was handling things.
We have to sling her to let her use the bathroom so hopefully we dont have any issues with that. The vet was very hopeful though and said this was the best POSSIBLE scenario - when we initially went she didnt even give this as an option, she had said best case scenario was atleast her left paw was fractured but would only need a cast a no surgery so we were very pleasantly surprised. Instead of it costing $3000 plus the $600 we paid earlier today the whole thing only cost $690. We didnt want to bring her just for a sprain but I'm glad we did because now we know what to watch for and how best to care for her and shes got pain medication so she can relax more.
