I was feeling a bit fed up on my due date, 21st of April, and I'd been having odd niggles and mild contractions a few times throughout the day. I hadn't had anything to suggest labour was iminant and I felt overdue even though I wasn't because I'd thought she would come two weeks early like her brother did. Also she was facing sideways and I knew I ought to be doing more to try and rotate her.

Just before 7pm I decided to lie down on the bed to take the weight off my pelvis while OH gave DS his bath. I felt a little gush and thought I'd weed myself, then I stood up and it carried on coming. I started laughing and shouted to OH. Then I went downstairs to phone the birth centre who contacted the community midwives. I also had a chat with my mum and alerted my friend so she could be on standby incase we needed childcare.

Contractions started and gradually got more intense so I had to lean on the birthing ball and really focus on my breathing to make it manageable. I was sick just before the midwife turned up at 8.30, she told me the second midwife was right behind her with the gas and air. When I'd got my gas and air the first midwife examined me and told me I was 6cm. Then we all sat on the corner sofa while I laboured holding onto OHs hand and getting dopey on gas and air.

At some point I started to feel pressure and that was far more manageable than the previous contractions. a little while after that the midwives told me she'd turned into the perfect position and not long after that I felt the head move down and the midwife said she could see her. It took a while for the head to work its way out as she had her hand up by her face and I was doing it in little controlled pushes. Once the head was out my contractions stopped so they asked me to stand to deliver the body and one big push and she was out.

In total from waters breaking to her being born was 5 hours. She missed being born on her due date by 2 minutes. She weighed 8lb 4oz and 51cm, a lot bigger than her brother was. She's a fab feeder and she fed for over an hour when we had skin to skin.

The only bad thing about it is that it's aggravated my PGP but that's getting better each day. I especially loved being able to snuggle up in my own bed with OH. Now if only she'd let me get some sleep...

Thanks ladies. It feels like it was such a long time ago now. We have our final midwife visit on Wednesday and the health visitor on the same day and then we're done.
