Okay so I've always had a thing for wanting to name my first son after his father. My OH knows this, and initially I told him I wanted a Jr. Well, he said no Jr, he want's a II. I really really don't like the idea of a II and sorta began to dislike the idea of a suffix at all. So, a few months ago I told him I wanted to give our baby his first and last name, but I wanted a different middle name.

Spent the last four months-ish going back and forth with middle names... after sorta not coming up with anything I like, I told him I was considering just naming the baby after him entirely, just no suffix. He says he wants a II. I am about 99% positive I'm not tacking on a II to my boys name.

Today I was browsing the web for baby names to consider for his middle name, and OH comes in and says if I wont name the baby after him entirely, not to name it after him at all. Whaaaat?! He called me selfish for wanting to decide on a different middle name, regardless of the fact that the baby's going to have his first AND last anyway. Any opinions on how to make him see I have every right to choosing at least a part of his name myself?

aww...that sucks, im sorry. i dont really know quite what to say...do you know exactly why he wants a II instead of a jr? my cousin has a II after his name and my uncle has a II as well, but i can't help thinking my aunt and grandparents did it with the intention of (and i could be completely off the mark here) making it look a bit more professional on documents and things when they got older...one of them went into a professional position and the other didn't and i don't know if it matters but maybe he thinks jr sounds a bit "younger" and II sounds more professional, manly, strong, etc...? i honestly don't know. men can be a bit funny about stuff like that sometimes, i think, and im not entirely sure why. but i do agree that you most absolutely do have a right to help name a child (it took two to tango, after all!!) so maybe you decide the first part of the name and he gets the II part? just a suggestion :)

er, i just re-read what i wrote...maybe it didn't help completely (i missed the part about being 99 percent positive about not tacking on a II). hope it still helped a little bit!

Wait, you name your child after him and you're selfish because you'd like to choose him a middle name? I'd call his bluff or tell him to suck it up and stop acting like a spoiled child.

gotta say...i do agree with trumpetbum there, actually, i take back what i said :)

Sorry, no help I have the opposite problem where OH sprung it on me he'd like a boy to be named after him in some way, after I thought we had decided against that. I'm probably going to compromise by using his name as a middle name (already getting his last name), though that means that several names I like are ruled out as they totally don't go with his name.
Maybe consider giving the baby two middle names? One you pick, one the same as OH?
I have a few Jr's in my family, though no one calls them that. I have my grandfather JH, Uncle, JD, and cousin, JM, all have different middle names and except for my grandfather, are called by first and middle to differentiate them.
