Hi, we are still WTT but wanted to have names picked already.

Husband likes Aliyah for a girl and I like Amaya so I was looking at Spanish names and found Alaia/Alaya which we both love and is a perfect compromise to so yay!....but my name is Layla so do you think Layla and Alaia are too similar?

I would think they're too similar. And I wouldn't use it (but I'm crazy like that.) Everyone is different! I think if you were both absolutely in love with that name, and couldn't possibly find another one you would use, then I would go for it.

I have come across this problem before with my name. I've liked Lacey and Macy - but I'm Casey!

I love how you compromised with such a cute/different name!! It's clearly similar, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, is it? If you both LOVE the name then go for it! Since you are WTT though I'd keep thinking of other names but if you keep coming back to Alaia then it must be a sign!

Good luck!!

Also, you may like names like:
Aveya (uh-vey-uh)
Maya (my-uh)
Keira (keer-uh)
Jamiya (juh-my-uh)
Maliyah (muh-lee-uh)

Or, sticking with the 'Alaia' theme, to make it more different, what about:
Dalaia (duh-lay-uh)
Talaya (tuh-lay-uh)

Thanks ladies. Wannabe, I like lots of your name ideas but he's so blinking fussy!

I love the name and think they only sound a bit odd when you say our names together but like you say, can keep thinking

I think Alaya & Layla are way too similar - sorry! :flower:

I absolutely LOVE Amaya & Aaliyah - they are both gorgeous names!

What about Alayna/Alaina - beautiful name but may possibly be too similar to Layla too.

Hmmmm. Well it seems pretty 50/50 on here so far. I love the name but still worried it's too similar. DH thinks it doesn't matter and all that matters is we love the name.
He would say that though as he's so fussy over names! There are a few that I could go with but it is nice to find one we both love.

I like it, and I agree it's similar, but I actually think that quite cute.

I wouldn't use it, it's too similar imo, but than I didn't use the name Jayden because I thought it was too close to my DHs name which is Jason

I think they are similar but that's not a bad thing in my opinion, my oh is Lee when we had a daughter we named her Leah after her daddy : )

I think it depends...I assume your name is Layla with an a as in game, whereas Alaia is al-eye-a am I correct? Or are you pronouncing it with the long A sound? I think that if you both love the name it shouldn't matter, I knew a mom whose name was Maya and named her baby Kaya. To each his own. However personally I would prefer the Spanish pronunciation of Alaia/Alaya which is the shorter different A sound than Layla.

I don't get why it matters if they're similar? Some people name their children after a parent with the same name! I'd say go for it if you really love it x

What is the Spanish pronounciation? To me they have the same sound Layla and Alaya both with a as in play.

Thanks heaps for all the replies. Think we will go with it. For me the worry was all about other people saying Dh's name, Layla and Alaia.

Ah lie ah versus Ah lay ah. I've always read it the first way. We had a little girl named in honor of her basque heritage, her name was Alai.

I think Delila (Duh lee luh) could be a beautiful option :)

Thanks for all the replies. Still not 100% but Alaia is definitely at the top of our list

Why can't DH' be more flexible?! t's only one little letter!

Amaya, Alaya.
