ok so i love looking at different baby names but some times there are onese from different countries who pronounce letters differently than we do in the US. like irish names i know some are said different but dont know how to say them....

can you all share some names that sound different and explain how you say them... either your name your childs name or even just names u happen to think of....

or...what the different letters sound like where you are so maybe if i like a name i find somewhere i will know how to say it

Sorry, can't think of anything (at least nothing I could explain in writing), but I'd think about this: If you don't know how to pronounce it, then chances are most other people your child meets won't know how to pronounce it either and they'll have to forever correct people. I think if you like foreign names it would be better to pick one that's pronounced as it reads in English.

I am in Russia so can pass some names on:

Roman - Roh-mahn (for a boy)

Natalia - nah - tah - lee-yah

Anastasia - Ah -nah - sta - cee - ah

Anya - Ahn - yah

Katya - Kaht - yah (short for Eckaterina)

Alina - Ah - lee - nah

(Russian uses cyrilic so the spellings I used are the most common transliterations)

Russian has lots of pretty names for girls - not so keen on most of the boy names:flower:

Irish:
Siobhan (Shiv-awn)
Sinead (Shin-ade)
Niamh (neve)

Aisling (ash-ling)
Dearbhla (Derv-la)
Eithne (enya)
Orlaith (orla)

Eoghan (owen)
Padraig (paw-drig)

Welsh:
Ioan (Yo-an)
Dewi (dow-ee)

Ffion (fee-on)
Ieuan (Y-aye-an)
Iestyn (Yes-tin)

thanks every 1. i looove the irish names because both me and OH have alot of iirsish in us and thats what he likes as far as names he wants something irish so i was thinking as far as middle names so people wont have to pronounce it much

kepp the names commin

My niece lives in Greece and her name is Antonia, but it is pronounced An- don- ee-a

Some more irish -

Roisin "Row-sheen"
Aisling = "Ash-leen"
Aibhinn = "aive-een"

Oisin = Osheen
Kian = Key-an
Caolan = Kale-an

And my name, Anne, in Irish is Aine = "On-ya"

My name isn't unusual, but it's spelt the Welsh way, which confuses a lot of people!
It's Ceri - pronounced Kerry :)

its so interesting to c the different ways of spelling and saying names in different parts of the world.....

so with AISLING... do you say the "g" at the end?
i like it with out the g

I would say Ash-leen but there are various ways of saying it.

Also forgot my own fav name - Cliodhna which is pronounced "Clee-uh-na"

I love the traditional Irish names but unfortunately my hubby doesn't agree - In Northern Ireland having an Irish name kind of marks you out as a Catholic so some people prefer to have more generic names

ok cool i think that might be 1 of the middle names we would end up with when i get pg if we have a little girl....we have had names picked since we started dating but could never pick a middle name and OH likes irish names and both like that one....

but i still want to see other names and who knows it might help some1 else pick a name

Niamh (neve)

Wow, that's how you pronounce that name? I was wondering about this one as I've seen it often in the forums!

bump.....

i know theres alot more names out there!

We are Canadian (I'm English Canadian, OH is French Canadian).

Our boy's name is Alexandre Joseph, which is pronounced:
