I am 32 yrs old and my wife is 26 yrs old. I have erectile dysfunction problem. So sometimes it does n't happen to have the activity :sex: when she is ovulating. We desparately need a baby. So opting for Home Artificial insemination. My wife doesn't have any fertility issue and her cycle is normal. Can anyone who has been successful in Home Artificial insemination or knows much about Home Artificial Insemination answer my below queries?

1. Is it as effective as having normal intercourse ?

2. From which internet site should I buy the insemination kit ?

3. Is there any special kind of syringe available in the market for insemination ?

4. How much should I insert the syringe ?

5. I have seen some 10 ml oral syringes in medicine shops. Since the rim of the syringe is sharp my worry is if she will get hurt while inserting it. Please suggest the best syringe.

6. What is the best ovulation prediction kit available in the market ?

Please let me know your advice and how you have achieved it.

Your help will be much appreciated.

Hi :flower:

1. I think so, though I'm not aware of any evidence either way. The website I met my donor through states very clearly that natural insemination (intercourse) is no more effective than AI. I've known enough women get pregnant from AI to believe this.

2. All I bought by way of an "insemination kit" was some sample jars and oral syringes. I got both from ebay - fwiw I bought 5 jars and 10 syringes, though I could easily have used less. I spent less than a fiver altogether.

3. Any needleless syringe will do - usually they'll be marketed as oral medicine syringes. Some women use 5ml, some use 10ml (I use 10ml). I have heard some people recommend food-grade syringes, because there is some idea that non-food grade may kill sperm. I know enough women who've got pregnant using regular oral syringes to know this isn't a big thing, but it *may* be true? I don't know really.

4. You want to basically coat the outside of the cervix. When fertile, the cervix is pretty high. I insert it as far as it reaches. I also depress the syringe slowly and turn it slightly to make sure it's hitting the right place.

5. I'm not sure what you mean about the rim of the syringe being sharp? It's not a particularly pleasurable experience, but it isn't uncomfortable either. Remember the syringe is relatively small - it's much like inserting a tampon really. But of course just insert slowly. Use lube (preseed, conceive plus, etc) if she prefers.

6. I've used a mix of internet cheapies ('One Step') and Boots own make. I don't think either are better than the other, although the ones where you actually pee on a stick are more convenient imo than the ones you have to dip in a jar. I'm not sure whether I'm going to keep using them, though - personally I find tracking my mucus easier and clearer. :)

Couple of other things to mention - water kills sperm, so the syringe and collection jar should be clean and dry. This is far more important than whether or not they're sterile. Also, sperm outside the body doesn't live very long - some say up to two hours, I always make sure I inseminate within an hour, generally as soon as possible.

Good luck to both of you. I hope you get your baby soon.

Thanks you very much for your reply. I will appreciate if you can answer the below questions for me.

1. I will insert the syringe straight and then while injecting should I tilt the syringe backward or forward ?

2. Is it necessary for her to be fully aroused ? Since she is doing it first time , I know she won't be aroused much and she will be nervous.

3. Which is the best day ? one day before ovulation , on the day of ovulation or days after the ovulation ? How many times should I perform AI in a cycle ? Just wondering starting from 9th day if I inject every alternate day , will it be good enough ?

Please please help me by answering these questions.

1. Maybe you or she could feel for her cervix first, so you know roughly where you're aiming for? In my experience it's slightly backward, I think.

2. There is some evidence to suggest that it's helpful if she has an orgasm afterwards, to make the cervix dip and sort of 'suck up' the sperm. (There is some evidence suggesting it doesn't make any difference.) I often *try* to have an orgasm after, but as you say it's not necessarily the most exciting time! I wouldn't worry too much either way. Her cervical (fertile) fluid and arousal fluid are different things - if she's fertile, her cervix will be wet with fertile mucus regardless of whether she's aroused.

3. I think I've read that 48 hours before ovulation is ideal. I usually try to do ovulation, two days before, and four days before (because it's guesswork, sometimes that will be three days before, one day before, and one day after, which is OK too) - but I am using a sperm donor and have to negotiate with him for availability. Assuming your wife doesn't ovulate really early in her cycle, every other day from cd9 sounds good, until she's sure she's ovulated. :)

Thanks IGL for your suggestion. Have you been successful in AI at home ?

Today is the 27th day of her cycle. I gave a trial inserting the syringe. After about 2 inches she can't insert it any more . I believe it is touching her cervix. Is it enough if I just inject at the cervix opening ?

i know exactly how u are feeling , Firstly i purchased a clear blue ovulation monitor , after a month or 2 it will tell u the peak time for baby making , My husband suffers from ED ALWAYS ! WE were both desperate for a baby also , We could tell from the monitor when i was ovulating , My Husband would do his deed into a plastic cup , then i would suck it up into a 10 ml needleless syringe and insert into myself , I found it easy once i located my cervic so i knew what direction to squeeze the goods out , 5 cycles and i got my bfp last monday ,, we are delighted
