hi there me and jen are quite worried here as she has just had her midwife call just before to say she was clear on spina bifida but she has high levels of something called estrodial....can anyone give me any ifo on this as we are really not sure and she has been booked in for a scan on thursday

hmm ive no idea but found this for you......

What is Estradiol?
Estradiol is actually a type of estrogen, which is the major female reproductive hormone. Estradiol is the primary type of estrogen, and it is produced in your ovaries. As they grow and develop, your egg follicles secrete estradiol, helping to trigger the rest of the reproductive cycle.

Pregnancy is the most common reason for a high level of estradiol (the predominant type of estrogen circulating in the body). Estradiol levels vary quite a bit throughout the menstrual cycle, too. During menstruation estradiol levels are around 45 pg/ml. By the time of ovulation, levels rise to around 400 pg/ml, then fall rapidly, then rise slowly to about 250 pg/ml before dropping again. During pregnancy, estradiol levels are about 100 times higher!

hmmm, it seems from that there's nothing wrong with high levels during pregnancy! are you sure she was saying it as if it was a bad thing? xxx

no idea to be honest its jsut the way they were saying she needs to go in for a scan on thurs which has worried us

welll i would say she is... or otherwise my midwife wud have said there nd then on the phone its nothing to worry about and they wouldnt have put me in for a scan :s ??

* Estriol may sometimes be ordered serially to help monitor a high risk pregnancy. When it is used this way, each sample should be drawn at the same time each day. An unconjugated estriol test, one that measures estriol that is not bound to a protein, is one of the components of the triple or quad screen. Decreased levels have been associated with various genetic disorders including Down syndrome, neural tube defects, and adrenal abnormalities. It is ordered during pregnancy, along with maternal alpha-fetoprotein (AFP maternal), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and inhibin-A tests, to assess the risk of carrying a fetus with certain abnormalities.

So says there is nothing bad about high levels

maybe they just wanna double check it's high
and not low?

i dont think its anything to worry about right now, and im sure they'll explain it at the scan! and if they dont mention it at the scan, then i guess its all fine! :hugs:

i guess jen might even find out if we are having a boy or girl if all is okayy ....

ee i never thought of that :d.... how good will that be if i get to find out wot i am having ? yeyyyy

i dontt think its anything to worry about either but goodluck at the scan tmo and let us know what happens :)xx
