Izzy has been on this for just over a week.
I have noticed after about half an hour black bits start appearing in the milk, it looks like mold.
Anyone else have this problem?x

hmmm i have never seen any. i will look closely at her next bottle though. lo has been on neocate since about 4 months.

I get it in every feed.
I do make it with room temp water though as she won't take it warm and I've found if i make and store them in the fridge they taste different :s

how do you make yours?

It really concerns me that they keep appearing :/ x

i have checked acouple bottles over the last day and i havent seen any

edit: i make mine each time with room temp water also. i do heat the water sometimes but i have never seen black bits in any bottles. i just looked at a bottle in the sink from acouple hours ago and the remaining milk didnt have any black bits in it. has it always looked that way?

maybe call the company to let them know and make sure its ok.

Hmm I have never noticed this!

Just an idea, but have you checked the date on the formula to make sure it's in date? When I picked up my prescription once they sent me away with out of date formula....!! Don't know if this would cause the black bits but just an idea to have a look!

Ill have a look at the date now.
I just made two in advance and kept in fridge and they never made any black bits.
The thing is I've had several tins from different chemists so if they are out of date that would be strange.

It really concerns me ...

X

I have mailed the company lastnight, waiting for a reply x

Yeah doubt it's date then if the tins have been from different chemists. Be interesting to see what they say when they email you back, can you let us know just out of interest.

I have never had that, I usually make them in advance an store in the fridge but if I'm out and about like today were at the inlaws I make them as I go and leave them to cool then feed but like I say never seen black bits.

I think the reason i haven't had the bits when making and storing is because it mixes better in warmer water.

Im going to try giving it a better mix when i add it to room temp and see how that goes.

Will let you know what they reply to my email x

Just had a thought - there aren't any black bits in the tin of neocate are there before you mixing?

You are not supposed to make up Neocate with cold water, it needs to be pretty much boiling for the powder to mix in with the water properly. Otherwise the powder doesn't mix properly and your lo isn't getting a proper feed.

I put in 10 scoops and then 5oz of boiling water, and mix it well. Then top up with 5oz of cold water so that the feed is not hot.

HTH x

Also, just to add, it is not advised to make up formula with water of less than 70 degrees. The reason you use 70 degrees or hotter water is to kill the bacteria in the non-sterile powder. The younger the baby, the more likely they are to get gastroenteritis from a feed that hasn't been made up in with hot enough water.

You can add powder (not Neocate though as it doesnt mix in cold water) to cooled boiled water as long as the baby drinks the milk straight away. But if you use this method, throw any unused milk away asap as it will be harvesting bacteria.

Sorry if you already knew this.

Did you hear back from your email to neocate? What did they have to say?x

No black bits in the tin, since I've been shaking it longer i haven't been getting any black bits.
Didn't have a reply yesterday but will check again this afternoon. I think its because i wasn't shaking it well enough or it wasnt mixing with the room temp water very well x

Thanks for your reply kanga.
when i was searching on Google as to why this happened i saw someone had rang their helpline in May about storing bottles in the fridge.

Their reply was to treat neocate like any other formula but the only difference is that it shouldn't be re heated.
Many people add to room temp water and i have only started doing it now Izzy is slightly older.
I would never do it from new born x
