Just a quick one from me, had baby Scott, started BF is latching on ok, however he is not waking every 3 hours for feeds, he is sleeping all of the time. Tried skin to skin contact, plese could i get some advice?

Thanks

Cath

Wednesday night at 23:45. Had first feed an hour later, fed regularly yesterday but last night was awake all night feeding but not latching on. Had a feed this morning for 2 hours 10:00-12:00 (on and off) but doesn't seem interested to feed now. Midwife said he should feed every 3 hours.

Dont worry too much just yet hun. He's probably knackered from the birth still. My LO went for 5 hours one time just after she was born. Just remember you are both learning and just go with the flow. The MW isnt strictly right there - if he's demand fed then you should do just that - wait for him to tell you. So long as he doesnt go more than 6 hours at this point dont panic. Take advantage honey - it gives your milk chance to come in. He wont starve himself I promise you! :)

Congratulations BTW x

The doctors told me that they are very active the first few hours after birth which is when they encourage you to breastfeed and then they tend to sleep for the next 24+ hours. My LO doesn't like to eat every three hours and I decided to just feed on demand, so he eats when he wants to eat. At night he will sleep for 5 hours at a time and I do not wake him up but he is gaining weight and healthy. So it is up to the parent whether you want to feed on a schedule like every three hours or when the baby decides he wants to eat.

Congrats hun! I was going to say, he is totally brand new and still adjusting to being outside, and like MM said is probably still tired from birth. Just feed on demand, and as long as you get plenty of dirty diapers, he should be just fine.

congrats! I would wake Javi up for feeds with a diaper change. Pedi said no more than four hours, but try for three span. :)

My LO slept loads too. In the end I woke him by changing his bottom for every feed and had to change his bottom mid feed to re-wake him. He would've easily slept for 6 hours or more if I didn't wake him. He got into the swing of it quickly though and started demanding himself. Just don't let him go too long - wake him if you need to.

its going alot better today although he hasnt pooed since thursday 9am and 3pm?!!?! hes fed regular today and sucking well. mw doesnt seem to bothered but he is getting weighed tom

Glad it's going better. Dont worry about the poo - a week is fine with a BF baby. There is very little waste to get rid of anyway. :)

just thought id update:

Midwife came today to check Scott's weight he'slost 5% which is fine, but is STILL worried about the poo wants him to be checked by a doctor if he hasnt gone tomorrow. she told me to switch feed today and express into a cup, but the switch feeding has just made him mad!!! so ive gone back to what I was doing......she wants me to express into a cup even tho she said ive got a good supply and he is having loads of wet nappies.

family are also driving me crazy people jus cant understand why im not giving him a bottle......yes im tired cos he fed all last night but its only day 4 of bf!

also got some lanolin came, any other ideas for sore nipples........I think they are sore from sucking rather than latch?!!?

5% is good, and just remember that up to 10% is normal. My son lost over half a pound, and I honestly never worried.

Stick to your guns with BFing, remind them all that it is your baby and it is how you have chosen to feed him, it is what you think is best!

After nursing, express a few drops of milk and rub it around, let it dry and then put the Lansinoh on. The milk will really help.
