Hi all,

Midwife mentioned that I needed to buy a new mattress for baby to use cot that DD used. Is this necessary? Are you?

We have a mattress protector and I was planning on just getting a new one.

Thanks, Amy x

Iv heard that it's old mattresses that are linked to cot death but they've said that about many things and they will probably never really no what causes it. I got a cot given to me with a perfectly good mattress but will still be buying a new one

I used same cot for dd1 and dd2 and will again this time but they have each had a new mattress. Too scared about cot death to not buy a new one xx

If it was old like say passed down 10 years ago then I would say definitely don't use it. If it was in bad condition I would also say not to.
We are undecided what to do as the mattress we got was an expensive but good quality sprung mattress with washable covers, it will have been well used for over 3 years and has seen it's fair share of accidents and sickness it looks great although I think I am leaning more to getting a new one.
xx

I'd buy a new one just in case, but I'm paranoid about things! :haha: I bought a new one for DD even though her hand me down crib came with one that was barely used. I even kept the plastic from the store on it and covered it with a protector and sheets. I had DH cut slits into the old mattress and dump it into the dumpster so no one would take it and use it because I was afraid of having that on my conscience.. so I guess I'm a little paranoid!

My dd used her cot mattress for around 2 and a half years but we have now thrown it out and are definitely going to be buying a new one x

We will use the old cot/cotbed but new mattress. We actually already chucked the mattress from the old cot. Can't chuck cotbed mattress yet as Eleanor still sleeps in the cotbed - she'll be a bit sad if there's no mattress, haha!

I'm planning on reusing dd matress however it has a Cover which I will remove and wash. Also I will use the steam cleaner and white vinegar to disinfect the mattress before then putting cover back on. Tbh she barely was on the mattress as she didn't use the cot until 10 months old and from then she had a 3 inch foam topper on top of the matress. That will not be reused though. The matress cost more than the cot!

I spoke to my midwife about this also. It's really about the risk of production of mould that's the problem. If you had stored it in the garage for example or it has been damp and not properly dried there could be a risk but if it has been used the whole time in warm conditions and with a protector on it should be fine. We had a really good quality spring mattress and our daughter mainly shared our bed so we will wash all covers and turn over. However we will replace all the Moses basket ones as they are foam and show signs of wear from our daughter where she lay. However you need to do what you are comfortable with.

Yeah my midwife mentioned this too which I didn't even know! She said I have to buy new cot mattress, new Moses basket mattress and new car seat as it's not recommended using second hand! My son only slept in his cot a couple of times with mattress protector on as he co slept with me the majority of the time before he went into his toddler bed so it's like new but I still have to buy a new one just to be safe but I do feel it's a waste of a perfectly good like new mattress!

Nanninoo I really wouldn't buy a new mattress in your case unless it's been stored as mentioned above.
And second hand car seats are a no, but only because you don't know if they've been in an accident, your own that aa long as they've not expired are fine. Xx

Thanks for your answers. I'm sure it's fine but I will probs buy another just in case. Imagine if the worst were to happen I would never forgive myself.

Will add that to the list.

Stupidly gave away most of our baby stuff with DD so we are starting again from scratch! X

I have to say although I'm getting a new one because we were given a cot I'm not sure a new one with each child is necessary. I mean they say it to everyone, even the people who won't be taking child one out of the cot until child 2 is here, how much more harm can it be to child 2 than it is to child 1? I understand if mattress has been in storage for a while or stored in bad conditions because then u risk mould but of its been in use or safely stored for a short while I don't see the harm.
That being said, once people put these thoughts into ur head u feel u need to be safe just in case so I understand that

My boss gave me a whole coy with mattress. We already bought a crib with a new mattress, but the one he gave me is really good about 5 years old. We're just going to save it.
