My dd has been eating puréed foods for about a month-month and a half. I've made everything myself (no commercial baby food for us). I would like to incorporate her eating herself so that she can learn to chew on her own.
I gave her an apple slice today, she gnaws on it and gets chunks off of it (she is teething a lot right now). She gags the chunks back out, is this a good food for her to start on, is there something better? I am just scared of her not being able to chew on the chunks that she breaks off....
Any help would be appreciated.

You could try something like toast. They tend to suck and gum it until it almost falls apart. Pancakes are similar.

You cold give some softer foods as apple is quite firm.

My LO started with things like cooked carrot sticks as they are soft and can be gummed. Also broccoli or banana.

Toast is good as they can easily grip it and it softens.

Apples can be really hard for lo's. I used to either grate them into porridge fingers, grate onto toast & grilled cheese, or cut into wedges and soften in the microwave so they were softer. My lo is 13.5 mo with only 6 teeth and still struggles with an apple that isnt softened and hes a great eater.
Any kind of vegetables cut into a decent shape for lo to hold. Either steamed, boiled or roasted is good to soften them. Omelettes cut into strips, pasta, noodles, soft fruit pieces, rice cakes with toppings, cheese slices, risotto, strips of meat...basically anything as long as its not too hard for lo to gum down to swallow.
