My daughter will be 2 weeks old tomorrow she seems to have caught a cold probably from her older sister. I feel so helpless, anyone else been through this? What did you do to help them and how long was it until they got better? I'm so worried about it going to her chest or her ears :(

My little man got one I had a suction that suction out his nose. I also would take him into bathroom when I had a shower the steam would help and I raised his mattress a little so he wasn't flat. At the end of the day i think was more upset than he was about it

My LO did not get sick until she was over a year and a half old. However, when she did get a cold I would suck out the snot with the bulb syringe, she hates it. I have heard really good things about electric nose suckers as well.

As for Tylenol, I have heard that its best to consult the pediatrician first.

Like PP said, steamy showers are great too. You can sit them in a bouncy in the bathroom while you take a shower and make sure the doors / windows are closed.

Saline nose drops or spray are suitable from newborn. I found them brill, a bit like a portable steamy shower room. They make the snot much more runny so it's easier to clear. I also have a humidifier for overnight which I found helpful

I used a humidifier too, mine was horrible though. It kept running out of water in the middle of the night.

Nasal saline drops or spray. I find the spray much quicker and easier. We use sterimar.

Keep baby elevated if you can. Raise the top of the cot up (put some books under the feet) which helps the mucous drain instead of sitting in the nasal canal.

Steamy room so the bathroom with the shower running.

Soak a cloth or something and put it on the radiator wth the heating on. As it dries it will put moisture in the air. You can also put a couple drop of baby Vicks onto a wet cotton wool ball and put that on the radiator and t will do the same thing.

Nasal aspirator - electric ones are amazing. Do them as often as necessary to help clear the mucous from the nose. They're not nice for baby so they will fight. Lay baby in your lap and do the saline spray/drops. Give them a couple of minutes to work and then I find it best to trap babies head in the crook of my elbow (gently... But enough so they can't move) and then quickly and gently place the aspirator just into the tip of the nose and suck. This is why I use electric. Easier and faster to press a button on and off. They will most likely scream but don't panic you are not going to hurt them as long as your gentle.

Please be very aware of babies feeding not/urination. With a cold it's harder for them to feed due to not being able to breathe through the crap in their nose. If baby is taking less than half of the usual feeds then they need seen incase they get dehydrated. Again with urine output. If it's less than half they need seen.
Be vigilant of babies breathing. If you can see baby pausing in breathing then they need medical attention straight away. If they seem to be breathing fast (resp rate should be 30-40 rpm), the skin sucks in under their ribs, in the centre of their chest, or the base of the throat, or flaring nostrils then these are signs of respitory distress and baby needs medical help immediately.

Keep an eye on babies temperature. If they get very cold and won't warm up again seek medical attention straight away. Hypothermia is anything under 35.0 degrees.
Last but not least if you can hear baby rattle when they breathe or wheezing or even feel it but not see it. Take them to the doctors so they can listen to the chest and lungs.

❤️❤️❤️
