Hi everyone!

I'm starting to pack my baby bag and have bought everything except newborn toiletries (shampoo, oil etc). Can you tell me from your own experience which brands and products you found best? Plus, the following:

  • Will I need a shampoo and a separate bath product for the first month or will a top-to-toe suffice? Has anyone used no products and still found it easy to clean the baby? I'm thinking wash cloth and water and then a light oil massage afterwards.
  • Baby lotion or baby oil? Which brands?
  • Nappy Rash Cream or Vaseline? If so, which nappy rash cream?
  • I have a sensitivity to Johnson's baby lotion so I'm thinking I shouldn't get that for LO either. Can anyone recommend any other product in lieu of that? Or will oil after a bath suffice for moisturizing?

I just want to use as little artificial products as possible till I find out how reactive the baby's skin will be. But till then, I need to buy SOMETHING! Sorry if these questions sound naive at this stage but there are so many products out there, I'm totally confused.

Oh and someone's recommended a Burt's Bee's starter set. Any reviews on that?

Thanks! :flower:

Tbh i never used eny thing at all untill about 2 months old! They dont get dirty so just water and flannel was good for me, i didnt want his skin to get dry using the products!

I didn't use anything except water for washing and olive oil (I'd probably use coconut oil now,) for massage and cradle cap. A friend bought me the Burt's Bees set, which actually came in really well after a few months. If you're changing frequently with nappy free time, you should avoid rashes, but the diaper cream in the little set is great (we found Alice had bad rashes when teething.) Personally, I try to avoid chemical things, so would stay well away from Johnson's and Vaseline.

It's also worth leaving the first bath for a while, as the vernix has got some amazing properties that it seems we're only just starting to find out about. A pat down should do for the first few days.

I got Little angels baby shampoo and baby bath- about half price of Johnsons, and I think you get more in them too. I did use it, as even Newborns DO get dirty- think of the amount of times they go to the toilet in a nappy in the day!! Obviosuly we used wipes, but we also gave her a bath (using a newborn bath support) once/twice a week which we change to nightly once she was two months.

I use Little angels nappy cream. Why pay for the high end brand, when you can pay less for the same stuff. Your paying for the brand name, not the product.

I also use Little angels baby lotion, although only use it once or twice a week.

I don't know if they sell it where you are at , as I am from the states... but the only thing I could use on my very sensitive little one was Aveeno baby products . I just seen they now all so have an organic line . I haven't tried the organic but will be doing so soon.

Thank you ladies! I thought I'd get beaten up for suggesting water and a flannel  But I had terrible allergies to perfumed products in my teens and I was literally bathing like that every day and it kept me clean and there was no BO or anything like that so I'm sure a proper bath where his body properly gets immersed once every two days or so will keep him clean and fresh at least till I can figure out what products suit him.

And AliceMummy, you are so right. I'm a very brand loyal customer but after using ASDA's own stuff, I've realized how much we pay for just the Johnson's etc brand names. And with the Johnson's recent cancer scare in America, I'm so scared about that brand now.

Snowbunny28, they do sell Aveeno here but only very limited stuff. I've seen some lotions for dry skin but not baby products. I'll have a look online - thanks!

Thank you all, again! :flower:

burt's bees. it's AMAZING. pricey, but u only need a tiny bit! for nappy cream, we use CJ's butter :)

1. You can just use a top to toe if you like, i used separate though i don't think it matters.
2. I didn't use any at first, i'd probably just use oil though incase of dry skin
3. We loved metonium nappy cream, worked within one use! :)
4. You might not need anything, but maybe just abit of oil, i sometimes put a drop of oil in the bath which makes his skin silky soft

you dont really need anything tbh, i started usin g johnsons and little angels on my son when he was about a month old, only because i was dying to!!! they didn bath my son in the hospital, but i did take lots of cotton wool and nappies for nappy change. oh and take lip balm, i forgot mine and boy did i need it.

Just wondered whats chemicly about Vasaline? its just patrolium jelly. Il be using that on babys skin. my midwife said vasalines the best for babys skin as well as cracked nipples. instead of lasinoh etc x

Johnson's makes natural products? That's what I'll be using.

Even "natural" products contain some pretty sketchy ingredients. If you're curious check out the online cosmetics database.

My daughter is almost 8 months old and so far we have only used half a container of California Baby shampoo. Infants justdon't get very dirty. We don't use lotions or oils or anything and she doesn't need them. Very rarely I'll put some Burts Bees diaper cream on her. But my attitude towards tolitries is usually "less is more"

It's a petro-chemical by product. There's debate about whether it can be contaminated in its processing. Regardless, I'd rather use something plant based.

I'll probably keep a new jar of Vaseline around just in case because my skin isn't sensitive to that. I have horrendous plant allergies so I try to steer clear of stuff labelled 'natural (with plant extracts)'

But I'd rather leave baby's skin alone with as little on it as possible, even Vaseline, because as you pointed out, its a petroleum by-product. But Vaseline is good in the sense that few people, have any allergies to it. But to each their own, I guess :) Thank you for the feedback, everyone! I have a much clearer idea of how to go about it now. I was panicking thinking I'll end up with a stinky smelly baby if I'm not using Baby Products :haha:

Cee- i thought id end up with a stinky baby too.. you know i wanted the whole " baby smell" which is what you get from products. i am worried about what she will smell like now.. especialy in the start when her oblical chord is drying of and detaching from the chord or whatever. it smells super bad!! and i was wondering how she will smell fresh! .. still wondering realy?

We're only a few days apart so I guess we'll get to discover that at the same time, :winkwink:

If he smells really bad, I'll sprinkle some Johnson's on his blankie to make him smell like a 'baby', heh heh heh :D
