Hello :hi: I am 29 weeks pregnant with baby #2, had my GTT yesterday and have found out today it is raised. I am not really surprised, as I have had glucose in my urine on several occasions now, am measuring large for dates (have scan on wednesday, but had polyhydramnios in 1st pregnancy, so kind of expecting that), and have been feeling crappy for a couple of weeks now. Thought I was anaemic - if only!

Anyway, my first appointment with the diabetic team is on monday, and I understand that is just a group session with very generalise advice, but I should be given the kit for blood sugar monitoring. My first individual appointment will likely be thursday. I really want to do the best I can to keep things under control while I am waiting for my appointments and was wondering if anyone has any tips on foods to eat / avoid etc. I realise my stash of Christmas chocolate is out of bounds, though :(

You have to balance with you eat and have a mix of carbs, protein, and fat to try to avoid spikes. Juice and sweets are completely out for me now. They put me on 2600 calories a day (because of the twins) and that is about 3-4 carbs per meal, plus 2-3 proteins, and about 1 fat serving. One serving of carbs is 15g (total carbohydrate on the label). It's about one piece of bread or one half of a hamburger bun. Protein is 7g per serving and fat is the same. (If you go over a bit on the protein it's okay- carbs need to be strict.) Snacks now are 2-3 carbs with 1 protein and 0-1 fat. They had to put me on insulin at 8 weeks, but my numbers are usually pretty good now.

I would just completely avoid sugar and anything that contains it, including fruit juices, even those 100% as they are full of fructose. This is what I'd been told to do before I met with the diabetic team. Also you want to avoid long intervals between your meals. Eat 3 meals and 3 small snacks every 2,5 - 3 hours. Carbs should always be paired with protein. I would also make some research and google about "fast" and "slow" carbs... Good luck!
