Hi ladies,

Can anyone give me a bit of advice on nipple sheilds and creams?

Im hoping to breast feed once my LO arrives and just want a bit of advice.

Thank you

i use Lansinoh lanolin cream - its good because you don't have to wash it off for feeding :)

i used nipple shields for a couple of days when my nipples were very sore and cracked/bleeding - the hospital told me loads of times they were only a temporary measure (in case I forgot?!) but they were necessary at the time - thankfully it was only a couple of days and they were healed :)

good luck - breastfeeding is hard work (I gave up twice at the start!) but i've been doing it for 2 weeks exclusively now and its definitely worth it!

Just curious what makes you want advice on those two things?

Nipple shields are really only good for help with cracked and sore nipples and really short term use. From what I know of them, you run the risk of decreasing milk supply with long term use (of course this isn't the case with everyone). If you are worried about flat nipples, Dr. Jack Newman's website is a great resource!

I never had a problem with cracked nipples, so I don't know much about creams, but the product the previous poster mentioned was what my sister used religiously!

Good luck with your pregnancy, breastfeeding is the greatest decision I ever made! I had a very difficult start, but my LO is 7 months old and we are going strong!

Thanks ladies!!

I have loads of things i would like to get advice on but thought id start small lol.

Get some Lansinoh in and use it every feed until it no longer hurts.

I never needed shields and I think the Lansinoh is partly to thank.

Nipple shields I believe are really for babies who are unable to latch on properly. Some people use them for cracked or sore nipples, but sometimes they are hard to get off of for babies so I wouldn't use them unless I had to.

I had a preemie and HAD to use a nipple shield. I would never use it unless I absolutely had to. Took 10 weeks to get off that *#$*@# piece of silicone. I wanted to burn all of them once we finally shook them, but we had to go back to them again later because he wouldn't nurse without them again. Would never use unless I had to, ever!

The Lansinoh lanolin stuff was okay, but I used it for like, 2, 3 days maybe? I was pumping exclusively at the time to bring in supply though. When LO started nursing without the shields my nipples got more bruised feeling than cracked and bleeding. I used the Lansinoh soothies gel stuff, THOSE were the bomb!

My nipples began to crack and bleed before I even left the hospital. They gave me a sample of Lansinoh lanolin that I began to use religiously. Unfortunately it did not help my case and only made things worse. The wounds on my nipples would constantly reopen. It wasn't until week 3 that I realized I had thrush. Lanolin will only help to feed the yeast, so I stopped using it immediately. Feedings were insanely painful, but I refused to use my manual pump until 4 weeks, because I didn't want LO to have nipple confusion. At week 5 I decided to try the nipple shield, but I found it rather useless in my case. It seemed to just encourage a horrible latch. It was yet another thing I ended up having to clean. It definitely doesn't work for everyone, and by then I was so used to feeling nipple pain, that I didn't care.

Lansinoh lanolin I can't recommend enough!! I had all sorts of problems until I used this, and at that point my nipples were in such bad shape that I had to use nipple shields too. Yes, they can cause problems with supply, so for that reason I would do a "naked" feed every once in a while so that lil one never truly forgot what things were supposed to feel like.

For me, the shields didn't harm my supply, and I used them just about every feed for around 3 months. I ended up feeding til he self weaned at nearly 16 months, so obviously did something right along the way! :haha:

Would you like a breastfeeding champion? These are ladies (including myself) that you can pm and ask any question you like about bfing. Nothing will sound silly to us, we've probably asked the same thing ourselves! We aim to support mums to be and new mums in their bfing journey and I for one found it a brilliant help in the early days. PM me if you want me to assign you a champ, and let me know if there's something in particular you want to ask so I can find the perfect champ for you :flower:

I only needed lanolin for a few days, I was fortunate that I didn't get the extreme pain, cracked, bleeding nipples some women get. The tube I have is the one the hospital provided, it is small but it has been enough.

I did have to use nipple shields. My daughter had a hard time latching at first. She now latches pretty well without it so I don't use it very often anymore. It did not affect my supply at all but she is under 2 weeks old and I would always try to latch her without it first so that may have something to do with it.

Good luck! What short time I've had breastfeeding so far I have loved :) It is a lot of work but it has been completely worth it!
