Lansinoh is a great cream for sore cracked nipples
If possible, I would avoid shields. I say this from experience. I use them to breast feed my son as he was unable to latch (eventually diagnosed with tongue-tie) but we're having trouble weaning him off them. Unfortunately the use of shields meant his feeding wasn't stimulating my supply enough and he wasn't feeding efficiently enough. This has resulted with having to express and take domperidone to boost supply, top ups with formula and an occasional colicky baby due to the wrong balance of fore and hind milk. Still, for us they have been a necessary evil, but use with caution!
