Birth of Baby Jude - 7lb 9oz

This is my second baby. I have a little girl who is nearly 2. I was induced at 38+3 with DD due to suspected pre-e.

I had been suffering from SPD since very early in my pregnancy (as i did with DD) and had 3 episodes of reduced fetal movement so when I saw the consultant at 36+5 he decided to try and give me a sweep (which was unsuccessful) and was booked in for induction at 38 weeks.

Went in on Friday 25th Jan and got Propess (24hr induction drug( at 10am. Baby was fine on monitor so we walked, bounced etc. Nothing! Propess was took out Sat morning and the 24 hr rest began. Nothing. No pains, no tighenings. Nothing.

So i was checked Sunday morning 11.00am and was still 1cm. So had prostin (6hr tablet) put in. The same midwife came back at 5 to check and i have got to 1-2cm so a little change and she put in the next prostin. If this didnt work then it would probably be cesarean if they couldnt break my waters. By this time 7 other ladies had come and gone - felt like rachel in friends!

I was on the monitor after the tablet was put in at 5pm for 4 HOURS! Baby kept either going to sleep or we kept losing the trace. The monitor registered some tightenings and i could feel them but they didnt hurt. At around 10pm i started to get worse but they wouldnt let my husband back so I told him to come and wait in the car park! Got some gas and air and they tried to make me take peth but I said no. Well they got lots worse until around 3am they started stopping! So i sent hubby home! Ridiculous!

So Monday (yes Monday!!) 8am the midwife comes round and says get ready your off to labour ward to break your waters! I ring hubby and he is here by 830. My sister got to the hospital for around 9am.

I was put on the monitor for 20 mins just to check baby happy and all was well and monitor was picking up some tightenings. Midwife broke my waters at 845 and said she would check me in 2 hours to decide if drip needed. My tightenings were getting slowly stronger and longer and I knew that this was the start. By 10am I was feeling sore so took the gas and air whilst bouncing or sitting in the chair. I said to hubby "im not having the drip i dont need it"

She checked me at 1045 and couldnt work out how many cm i was as she couldnt feel the rim of the cervix so got the senior midwife in. She same and said 4cm. Booooo but least I was progressing!

The next hour they pains got worse and worse so at 11.45 I had pethedine... oh this stuff makes me crazy! I remember having random conversations with my sis and hubby.... i love pethidine!

1hr 30 later at 13.15 I said I needed epidural unless i was 10cm. Mw checked and I was still 4!!!! So I told them I wanted epidural. I cried and said sorry to everyone (this was peth talking!!) I got the cannula in and got the gown on but he wasnt there!!! I kept saying "this is not fair you need to go and get him NOW!!" and hubby and midwife were saying he is on his way I promise! I was begging "find someone else, I understand what you are saying but you need to get someone else NOW"

30 mins later at 13.45 (still no aneathatist) midwife asked me if I wanted to push... I said NO i need my epidural (having had a baby I knew what was coming!!)

5 mins later at 13.50 I jumped on to all fours and started pushing... I just remember the midwife saying during my first push "pant pant pant" and i was thinking they say this when the head is nearly out?! So the next contraction I pushed for my life whilst literally screaming like no one has ever screamed shouting"get this baby out now, get it outttttt"!!!! I didnt care if i ripped open! Then the head came out and the next contraction the baby came out! And hubby said "we have a boy!!!!! :cloud9:

So i went from 4cm to 10 in around 40 mins and pushed for 3 mins!! Apparently his head was at an angle when she checked so he must have straightened up and i just dialted mega fast!

Delivered placenta, had skin to skin, only got a graze and a small tear which was not stitched. Baby wasnt interested in the breast so after 2 hrs i went for a quick bath while they changed the bed.

Came back and baby was making grunts which were getting worse. Midwife called pediatricans to come and check him over. They came in and started looking at him and when they took his oxygen levels they were 74% so they decided to take him to SCBU - this was around 430/5ish.

This is when things got scary.... this is not what I imagined our first few hours to be like. They put him in an incubator to give him oxygen and keep him warm and he had a feeding tube and cannula in to take bloods and give him antibiotics. He stayed in there that evening. Early hours Tuesday morning they put him on CPAP (an assisted breathing machine) and he went to intensive care. I thought it was just a different room.... didnt realise it was NICU :(

Wednesday afternoon they did a chest xray and he was getting very tired so they had to fully venitilate our little boy. They pumped him full of morphine and gave him a paralysing drug so he didnt try and breathe himself. The machine just took over.

On Thursday the tube got blocked so they had to remove and replace. Whilst they sorting out the replacement tube they put him back on CPAP and turned off the morphine and he started making some effort. I got a cuddle that night! On Friday they took the CPAP off for a cuddle and he stayed off it all night and the saturday he was moved to a shared room out of NICU back to SCBU! He got better and better and Sunday came back on the ward with me and Monday came home! It was a miracle how quickly he improved!

Looking back we were so close to losing him. Turns out he had RDS (respiratory distress syndrome) which is very common in prem babies but not in term babies. It was the drugs to help mature his lungs that made the difference.

So we are home - feeding didnt go great. I pumped whilst he was in SCBU and he had expressed milk and breast til day 10 but he wasnt latching and my supply dropped and he was still losing weight. We have gone to formula but are currently trying to replacte (with little success) Think i need to cut my losses and just enjoy our family. My DD loves him and just wants to "carry it"

He's a little trupper. totally with you on the labour Chris's was very similar. glad you got your gas and air though!

Your story does sound like my labour. Sad to read about his breathing distress but lovely outcome! Enjoy xx

Aww, Nix. <3 He's happy and healthy, that's all that matters. :) Well done!

Glad he is doing much better now! Cant believe it took you so long to get going and then went from 4cm to 10cm in 40mins :haha: typical! Congrats once again! He is a little star xx

Thanks for sharing Nix! So glad that you are all home and healthy now. Well done to you and to little Jude xxx

So lovely to read your story. That must have been so scary to have him in SCBU then NICU. BUt what a quick recovery!

No wonder he's struggling a bit with feeding. X
