Hi Ladies,

ive popped over from TTC forum, looking for some help. we have been trying for nearly a year & a half with no luck. the tests have come back fine, but still nothing. our doctor seems reluctant to help us. can i ask to be referred for IVF, or do i wait. not really sure on the process. we live in the Uk, and could never afford to go private, so was hoping for NHS help. can someone tell me the process on how i would go about this.

Thanks for your help ladies

Hi,
this must be a very difficult time for you both, and i am sorry you have to go through this. Some doctors are more reluctant to give fertility treatment than others. In my case i went in armed with info on me and they decided that it was right for me to take the next step. It did take 2 years and for them 2 years i was not ovulating and they knew this and still did nothing! In your case its unexplained infertility and i imagine the reason they are holding off is because you "should" be able to conceive. Sometimes that is not the case and a bit of help is needed, i dont know if they would put you straight in for ivf as that is seen as a last resort. Most of the time they will try less invasive treatments. After 18months of ttc they should be refering you to a infertility doctor. Hope this helps and good luck :hugs:

YES!

We went to the drs after a year of trying and they sent us away for all kinds of tests. 6 months later we saw the fertility consultant and on reviewing the tests said - we're referring you for IVF.

Was a bit of a shock really 'cos we hadn't even asked about it.

Definitely ask for a referral to a fertility consultant.
And if your doctor won't refer you - then go see another.
Sounds like you've just got a bad one

thanks ladies, she could see the frustration she just said keep on trying, i asked how long we need to go through this without any help, she said its unexplained i suggest you just keep trying it will happen. i cant take anymore im at the end of a line, we want a baby so much its killing me

How old are you? Where in the SE are you? In the UK there are strict protocols about referral.

Hello - I went to the doctor armed with information from this document. It's a bit long but definitely worth a read. Hope it helps:

i would ask to be refered, thats if they dont suggest it first, i wouldnt wait either because the nsh waiting list are mostly long, whats the point in waiting to be waiting again once your put on it, no time like the present! :D xx

we're also unexplained, i was told by my gp that if i didn't conceive within a year to go back and see her, she would do basic tests, like CD21 progesterone, day 1-3 FSH and LH and also semen analysis, and she referred us at the same time. But in the UK if you're unexplained you have to be ttc for 3 years before they'll give you ivf if you're under 35. Our clinic gave me clomid and did IUI, but had to be trying for 2 yrs before we could do IUI. We have had everything free, but it is very frustrating. I would definitely ask to be referred because you need to be in the system

good luck:hugs:

Hi Hun-sounds like we are in a similar situation. We too are unexplained. Been ttc for 14 months but ntnp 2 months prior so 16 months in total now. Initially my GP was great and referred me quite early on to the FS at our local hospital. We have had all tests going now and all come back clear and good. I had 3 rounds of clomid which made me feel awful and no BFP. Thereore my FS is now saying she wont do anything till at least Nov 2011 when she will consider us for IUI and we wont be put on waiting list for IVF until next summer. I was pretty gutted.

We are now going for a private consultation with a hope to having a round of IVF on the egg share scheme, bringing the cost down to about £1500. If we have one private go, we can still have our one free go on NHS if it fails. I simply cant just wait around doing nothing. I know it still could happen naturally but how long do you just keep plodding on? I think after about 18 months its starting to show that something isnt working quite right but thats just my opinion. Unexplained for some people can just be its taking its time. For others, there is something wrong and they will never fall pregnant naturally, yet because we dont have the technology to diagnose it, we all fall under the same catagory.

My close friend has been ttc for around 13 months now-she has PCOS and has just been referred for IVF on NHS. I am not saying I wish I had something wrong or PCOS but its a bit disheartening when she has not been trying as long and gets treatment so much earlier than us. It could be that we do have something wrong but because they cant diagnose it, we just have to wait or pay.

Have you looked at any clinics? The initial fees can be quite costly but some do the egg share for just the HFEA fee around £100 x
