my 5 week old has had constipation issues since he was born. Even on breastmilk. We switched to Similac Sensitive at 3 weeks, and when he persisted to not be able to poop on his own without qtip stimulation we switched to Similac Advance. We have tried diluted prune juice and we've tried water. For the past week on the advice of my pediatrician we started giving him one ounce of pedialyte 2 times a day. I thought things were looking better, but after a day and a half of not pooping he started screaming again this morning and after having to help him poop once again, it came out almost black and very firm and clay like. I'm at my wits end for my little boy.
Should I try a soy formula? Switch to Enfamil? I'm just not sure what to do and my pediatrician just doesn't seem to be worried about the fact that a baby can't poop on his own. I worry that there is a bigger issue. He has no other signs of anything being wrong.
Thanks

Have u tried offering him cool boiled water? I think babies can have fresh OJ too, 1 part juice to 10 parts water.. He may just be bunged up.. I found my LO had a really big hard poop and then lots of soft poo soon followed.... Bless them.. Aptamil do a colic and constipation milk which is really good.... Not sure if they have this in USA tho

Hope u get something sorted.. Your little man is beautiful by the way and such a lovely name :O) x

My friend had this issue with her wee girl (was constipated on breast milk) so she went to see a paed who diagnosed her wee girl with a dairy and egg allergy. Maybe try soy formula but usually LO's who are allergic to cows milk will be allergic to soy so you may have to try a hypoallergenic formula
