Non-invasive blood test for chromosomal screening... does it give yes/no answer?

I'm tempted to go for the non-invasive blood tests but my doctor told me that the results will not be a yes/no type thing. More like a calculation of odds.

Anyone here done the test? I'm in Germany so I'm not sure that the test is the same one that is being carried out in the UK as MaterniT etc.

It depends on exactly what test is being done.

With the exception of when not enough fetal cells can be isolated and a few other odd circumstances, the DNA-based chromosome testing (MaterniT21 etc.) is a yes/no. Either there is an extra chromosome or micro-deletion or there isn't. However, what that means for the healthy of the baby can vary greatly. Look at the range of people with Down syndrome or other genetic abnormalities.

If the chromosome testing is based on protein expression levels in the blood (QUAD test), the answer is an odds ratio.

I did the first trimester blood screen plus 12 week scan plus second trimester bloods (QUAD) and my results came back at 1 in 100,000 chance of down syndrome. So it's not a yes/no, but it's pretty close if you ask me.

Not everyone will get that black or white of an answer, but if you're only looking at the Quad screen by itself not combined with the scan and first tri bloods, then it's not really that accurate anyway.

I did Verifi, it is like MaterniT21 and these tests are 99% accurate, much more accurate than the standard NT scan and blood test. The results for Verifi are either normal or abnormal. I got a normal result and bonus they can tell babies gender with these tests too. We are having another boy.

The quad screen is numbers the panorama and harmony and matern.. those are yes and no. they test the babies DNA rather than hormones like the Quad test and are more accurate. Quad test is highly inaccurate. mine was high risk. I did the panorama and it came back "normal" and it told me the gender.

Let me add this if the quad test comes back at a high risk- trust me you will need to take another test like a harmony or panorama or an amnio to actually conclude your results. The non invasive tests like harmony etc - once those come back normal- no need to do a amnio. Personally - if it were me- id go straight into the harmony or panorama as opposed to a quad.

I agree, the 12 week nt scan and bloods aren't a sure fire way to determine if there's anything wrong. Some people get high risk then go onto having an amino or harmony test and it comes back negative for chromosomal abnormalities. I'm in the UK so I don't think Harmony or non invasive tests other than the QUAD screening are available on the nhs for free.. Although I'm grateful for our free medical care that kind of sucks because I don't like the idea of putting baby at risk (however small)

Iv not heard of a none evasive chromosome test tbh. My children have to be tested at birth for any chromosome problems.
