Ok, so DH has a friend who's new girlfriend just had a baby. They are trying to keep the newborn awake late now (he is 2 days old) to change his sleep pattern, hoping he will sleep through the night. Am I crazy or is this insane to do to a 2 day old baby??:dohh:

I would say that is pretty insane. A baby that small needs to feed every 2 hours. Babies naturally get a sleeping pattern

It's not a good idea, keeping anyone awake past their needed sleep time sends adrenalin through the bloodstream so that even when they do finally get to sleep it will cause them to wake / stir more often resulting in less peaceful sleep & more problems later (usually). Obviously there are always exceptions but I doubt it's going to work for them.

Newborns NEED their sleep. Sleep training a newborn is ridiculous. They have their own sleep pattern and we, as parents, should follow it. Essentially newborns sleep, eat, observe, and poop/pee. They'll be awake for short periods of time and those times will get longer and longer as they age, but basically that's all they do. I think it's something like 16 hours a day. Usually only sleeping 2 hours at a time or so. They NEED to eat every 1 1/2 -2 hours. I thinks keeping a newborn awake to make them sleep through the night (what about eating?) is actually kind of cruel. That's just my opinion. My son slept for 3 hours at a time during the night and 1 1/2 hours at a time during daytime. I felt I was lucky for the 3 hours.

I don't think it's a good idea at all. Babies need a lot of sleep.

I agree with all of you ladies. They posted on Facebook that they were keeping him awake until midnight so they could get sleep. It was all I could do not to tear into them about it. Sorry, but if you had that baby, you are now on their sleep schedule. Get used to it!

Totally insane and cruel. Newborn feed frequently and then sleep nits what they do. So tough luck, you get up when they do. All part and parcel of a newborn. My newborn woke up every 4 hours to feed and by God I felt blessed. I was fully prepared for every 1-2 hours tbh. Think it was for the first 2/3 weeks.

It's totally ridiculous and I hope someone puts them straight

Insane and extremely horrible for the poor baby :-(

Ridiculous!! Poor baby.. Hopefully they ll learn quickly that it's not going to work and probably just result in them getting less sleep then they would have originally xx

Agreeing with everyone else, newborns need their sleep for so many reasons, including their growth. I wouldn't imagine trying to change their schedule, especially that early. Sounds like it would make for a cranky baby.

Poor baby.
It takes a while for most babies to adjust. Keeping him awake will cause him to become over tired and not sleep. A newborns tummies are small and they need to be fed during the night ( some sleep through from very early on ) and some don't sleep through until they are 3.
They shouldn't have had a baby if they wanted it to sleep through right from the get go.

This breaks my heart. Poor baby. They are much too young at that point to be able to sleep through and keeping baby up all day... Poor thing would be so over tired. :(

WHAT??? That is shocking!!! Iv never heard anything like it where do people get these ideas from? Keeping a newborn awake till midnight!!! That poor poor baby! :(

Maybe you should casually bring it up and just state your concerns. Poor thing! I'm not a happy person at all when my schedule is messed with!

It didn't work either. They are complaining about it online this morning. How "they were led to believe that he would sleep through the night if they did it" and they "don't understand why babies wake up so much". Really???? They don't understand?? These are people who actively tried for this baby too.

Yikes. They probably should have done some research before trying. I don't know where they are getting their information from but all I heard when I was pregnant with my first was how much babies wake up and how little sleep I'd get so I was full lyrics aware. Plus the many articles about this. Poor baby. I hope now they let him sleep when he wants.
