Took Amelia to Baby Clinic today to be weighed. She's only gained 1oz since last week when they expect babies her age to gain between 4-7oz a week. Up until now her weight gain has been great. She was born 7lbs 10oz, at 10 days old she only lost a little and was 7lbs 7oz, at 16 days she was up to 8lbs 3oz and last week at 3 weeks old she was 8lbs 12oz. At her 3 week check, she had gained 9oz in 5 days. But this week she has only gained 1oz. She has been a little constipated this past week I think, her poo has been harder than normal (though I'm not sure why as her milk hasn't been changed) and she has taken less milk but seems satisfied and full.

She does have a cleft palate (uses special squeezy bottles to feed), so any trouble regarding feeding, I speak to my cleft nurse about. She didn't seem too concerned, said it's most likely a blip and she will probably pick up but I am worrying like hell. She said if she doesn't pick up, we can think about trying her with higher calorie milk but she wants to avoid it for now because she is only one month old. She is coming to see me next week anyway and will carry out a feeding assessment.

But for her weight, she should be having 600ml in 24 hours (sorry, I know most people use oz but her bottles only measure in ml's so that's the measurement I'm used to using. But it is just over 21oz). She has only been having 400-500ml each day this week so needless to say I am very concerned.

Wondering if any one elses babies have had this where they have dropped their amounts, and did they pick back up? She doesn't seem lethargic, when she is awake she is very alert. But does seem a bit tired when she is feeding. We may need to change her teats, but she seems to sometimes struggle with the amount of milk coming out of the bottle so I'm not sure a faster flow would help.

Sorry for the ramble..

I drove myself batty with dd as she often didn't drink her minimum. A change in milk did help her, but she was still just about hitting minimum. Some babies don want as much as these guidelines. I wish I'd spent less time worrying. Just keep an eye on it, and work with your cleft nurse.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one worrying about this sort of thing. My OH thinks I'm silly for worrying but I can't help it.

It's far easier said than done to just let it go, especially when lo isn't gaining weight in the way they're meant to. The health visitors here had me completely paranoid. I ended up with a spreadsheet logging times and amounts so I knew if I should panic that day or not. When I realised dd needed new milk she was like a different baby and gained weight well, though still only drinking the "minimum". But it calmed me down.

A friend went through a similar thing recently and thankfully never let anyone make her paranoid, she just used collective advice her friends had been given!

How did you know that she needed new milk?

She kept dropping her amounts, building them slowly then dropping off again. And she'd scream in hunger but refuse the bottle. Health visitors refused me help as she was formula fed. I ended up speaking to an aunt over in ireland who'd had similar with a young cousin, and she'd been advised to try a different milk. Hvs and GP here said not to do it, but we'd tried everything else. First bottle in and she was happy as larry.

Oddly I've now noticed his advice becoming more prominent now. Certainly wasn't around much just over a year ago!

Sounds similar to mine then. She picks up for a day or two then drops her amounts again. I'm so worried about her.
