Nursery furniture - is a wardrobe really needed???

Hi All, I have dipped in again from 2nd trimetser as you ladies are the experienced one

I am trying to sort my nursery furniture, do i really need a wardrobe in there as well as a chest of drawers. It will be very tight on space if i have all three inc cotbed. Do you really hang baby clothes or will it be better to get a good size chest of draws instead. Plus its the cost of anither piece of furniture!!!

You could avoid it yeah. Right now isaacs wardrobe is empty as we are about to move and all it had in it was a few coats and items for the next size up which are now in a plastic box under the bed.

I didn't think I'd use a wardrobe so I don't buy one when I was pregnant. But after Lily was born it became obvious we'd need one. We found with pretty dressed and cardigans they needed to be hung up and not folded in a drawer. Also the wardrobe was good for the mountains of clothes which didn't fit her for months after she was born.. I just hung them at one end of the wardrobe and used them as they started to fit. X

All of LO's clothes are being kept in plastic boxes (three-tiered). Saves lots of space and I can fit a lot. I only hang her clothes to dry before I roll them up and put them away.

We've not got one and I've never found myself regretting that. Drawers work fine for us!

DS1 has no dresser at all, just the closet to hang clothes in and two 3-tiered plastic drawers to put pants/pjs in underneath the hanging clothes.

DS2 has a dresser with 3 drawers for pants/pjs. I hang everything else. Kind of up to you whether you want to hang stuff or fold it in drawers though. I find it easier to pick out what shirt I want him to wear from them hanging up, but that's just me.

I fins it easier having clothes in a wardrobe. I would iron things, put them in the draw and then they would get messed up. Me and on only use wardrobes too.

I have her closet and dresser (wardrobe) packed full of clothes, i think it depends on how much clothes and etc you need.. if you wont fill it i dont think you would need it

I only bought a chest of drawers for Eva's room and it was perfect. It was a cost thing, but I didn't feel I missed a wardrobe in the slightest. I will buy the wardrobe to match when she gets older and we can afford it, but I've just bought the same chest of drawers for the new baby's room and we will do the same again.

Probably depends what sort of mummy you are in terms of dressing your LO. If you are the sort to like fancy clothes and keep them ironed, then a wardrobe might be more important, but if like me you like comfy clothes and don't really iron, then it's probably not so important!

I'd definitely recommend getting adult sized furniture rather than the mini stuff they sell for nurseries. Will do them as they grow. I got this one from ikea - the small drawers are great for separating things out.

Personally, I need one. I have a large chest of drawers, which are very deep, but I keep nappies and toiletries in there and one drawer is full of clothes we were given as gifts that are still too big for him. I also keep blankets, muslins and towels in a drawer. I would have no space for all his clothes if I didn't have a wardrobe.

Yeah agree with pp, you only need a wardrobe if you are the sort to iron clothes.

I just have baskets under my changing table, and bung his clothes in there. I also have plastic storage boxes for bulker stuff.

I have a wardrobe with a couple of drawers under it for each boy.

It's more than enough. All clothes are hung with vests and socks etc in the drawers.

I prefer a wardrobe as I think clothes look better when they come out, but I could prob manage with just a good set of drawers.

I have a wardrobe with two draws underneath (a baby wardrobe as part of a nursery set) and a chest of draws. I found I needed both what with blankets etc taking up a lot of draw space. I've also got Los clothes that it now in the wardrobe and on the shelf at the bottom and in one of the draws underneath the wardrobe, then bigger clothes in the other draw.

I found it gave me space to put thins, like sleepsuits together, outfits arranged etc so I'm not messing about trying to find something that matches.

In the chest of draws I keep cot sheets, blankets, bibs/shoes/socks/hats etc then in the top draws are swimming things and nappy change (the draws have a changing top on the top)

We bought a set from mamas and papas which included a wardrobe and I totally agree with this - pretty little girls clothes NEED to be hung IMO!

I just use a chest of drawers and one drawer under his cotbed which is handy for bedding. I only keep the size that he wears in the drawers and am quite good for archiving for want of a better word!

He is a boy though so no pretty dresses and I don't iron his joggers and onesies haha.

That also had a double use a changing table before he could roll as I just put a changing mat on top and the nappies etc in the top drawer and on a shelf above.

I wasn't going to buy any furniture apart from a cot, however, my aunty bought us a cot, drawers and a wardrobe for LOs nursery. The drawers and wardrobe are full to the brim of clothes, blankets, muslins, towels, bibs, socks etc! God knows where we would've put the stuff if we didn't have the furniture!

Hah, I do the exact same. First drawer has nappies/bibs/creams etc as I have an inflatable changing mat on the surface. Second drawer has her clothes, third has sheets, blankets and towels and last drawer has gifts/things not currently in use.

We got a sweet wardrobe on cheap at IKEA and I use it to hang all her pretty dresses and blouses, plus OH added additional shelving for extra storage. Also the chest of drawers and wardrobe we bought are adult furniture so it will "grow" with her too.

If you're not sure you need one, I wouldn't buy one. You can always get one later if you find you do want one, but if you spend money and then regret it, well you've already spent the money!

I have two girls aged 3.5 years and 20 months. They still don't have a wardrobe! When my first was a baby we did actually have one for her (just a shorter adults' wardrobe) and it was nice at first to hang her pretty dresses, arrange outfits etc but it wasn't worth the space it took up and the novelty of cute hangers wore off pretty quickly! I got rid of it after a while and got a couple of sets of hooks for the bedroom wall instead - pretty dresses were hung up on there. It was practical and nice to look at

Then we moved house and had the second baby and the girls' bedroom has plenty of room for a wardrobe now but I prefer the extra space. There is a chimney breast in there with shelves either side and they are so useful. On one side, under the shelves we have a decent chest of drawers where most of their clothes are and on the other side under the bottom shelf (they're height adjustable shelves), I have put a curtain wire and we use that space for anything that needs hanging. It's a space too narrow for even a children's wardrobe but even with two girls, both with a decent number of dresses, cardigans etc, it's plenty big enough.

Its all we have for DD2 as she is in our room and the only other room is for DD1 (they will share eventually). Draws just end up cluttered here anyway!

He has a walk in wardrobe with rails, shelves and tubs, it's ridiculous how much stuff he has!! But I am able to keep boxes of nappies, wipes an all his blankets in there as well.

I'm actually jealous of my own childs wardrobe lol
